Find Files is very slow

We are running Windows 2000 Professional (Not sure about service pack level) and when we attempt to run a “Find File” via network, it is incredibly slow. However, on another machine with Windows 2000 and Service Pack 2, it is blazingly fast. We have already ruled out network connection/NIC.

Does anyone have similiar issues with running ‘Find’ files being very slow?

It could be because of Win9x machines on the network. Does this KB article sound familiar?

There’s no fix listed there but there is a registry modification that will fix it…..and I’ll be dipped if I can find it at the moment. Check into that and see if it sounds like your problem. I’ll keep looking for the tweak that fixes it.

Hi Brent,

I checked using SP1 and SP2 machines by searching and monitoring the registry accesses with Regmon. On all test machines I could find no reference to the “scheduled tasks” key that I know existed – at least at one time anyway. And performance on these machines was also fast.

Since the review date on the KB article I noted was May 12, 2000, I would be willing to bet that MS has fixed this ‘anomaly’ in either SP1 or SP2. I can’t reproduce the problem on any of the machines I tested with, but if you try with Regmon you may find different results.

Though I haven’t heard of this problem specifically, I just thought that it may be a login script mapping more drives on the slow machine than the fast machine. Ya know: more data to search through…

Sorry, our network connection went down for 24 hours. Just got back the access…

I checked the computer, it was running Service Pack 1 so I applied SP 2 and got some strange behavior, especially when it restarted, all I got was blank screen (on the desktop) and was forced to CRTL+ALT+DEL and log out which finally kicked it into desktop. Searching for files is still extremely slow and now we are receiving an error message that “CSC Notifications Window” is not ending properly whenever we log out or shut down Windows? Anyone recognize this?
