If you open the Organize Bookmarks menu option (in the Bookmarks menu), you’ll find a search ability at the top of the window.

I see plenty of posts for finding/locating/searching for a bookmark file, but am wondering if it possible to find a specific bookmark.
In Firefox I have collected my bookmarks into a tree structure, so all the Webmail bookmarks are in one place, all the WOW bookmarks are together, but today I want to jump to CraigsList, which I know is in there somewhere.

But did I put it in “Groups” or “2BInvestigated” or “Search Engines”, and so on.

I can’t find any way to click on the Bookmarks menu item and ask for a specific bookmark – searching in the (currently) 534KB can be achieved by double-clicking on the bookmarks.html file and using the browser search facility, but there seems to be no easy way of doing it within the menu system.

Am I correct?

I’ve also just searched out this addon for Firefox. Enhanced Bookmark Search. This will add a search option to the bookmark menu, which inturn takes you to a window very much like the Organize Bookmarks display, with your results.

While I’m finding all these wondering ways of using bookmarks and searching for them, I discovered the following:

Out of the box (ie a plain installation), pressing CTRL+B will display your bookmarks on the left in the bookmark pane. At the top of this pane, you’ll see the search box. This is also a handy if you have any RSS feeds setup as bookmarks (eg. Latest Headlines on the default Firefox bookmark toolbar). With more information from Bowlie, On a Mac it’s OPTION + COMMAND + B, the search box is at the bottom.

Note: You’ll find the results to your search is a dynamic list. Simply pausing while you type your query will change the display. To find more results, simply use your backspace key. Your entire list will reappear if the query box is empty. This is also cross-platform, so all our Linux, Apple, and Microsoft OS friends can use this tip .

When I first saw Chris’ subject I thought, hey this is exactly my problem. But I then realised it was about finding a specific bookmark and then use it/delete it/etc. Not actually locate where it is stored. That’s my problem.

I have been using Ctrl-B + search; incremental search or inline search or whatever it’s called, since day one, some years ago. And I count it as one of the main features Fx has compared to IE (or had back in IE6 time).

But let’s say that you know that you have a bookmark somewhere, the search can help you find it, but there is no way to tell where it is stored. No right-clicking check properties, no nothing. The reason to find the location could be to move the bookmark to a more prominent place, easy to find the next time. Over time we do collect bookmarks, but our use of them change. So a year later I suddenly may be in a project were I need access everyday to some bookmarks, or some other reason.

The obvious answer is: use the search again. Yes it works, but it would be nice to be able to find the location.

Chirs’ method to open bookmarks.html also works but isn’t so easy.

At the moment my bookmarks file is 1.84 MB, so I guess there are some bookmarks there , don’t use IE so I can’t count them (via explorer, files).

I have earlier looked very briefly at the Fx Add-ons pages in the Browse bookmarks category, but have not found anything yet. Maybe those sync.tools may have such function.

Anyone knows a way to locate where from within Fx?

I’ve never used it but the Locate in Bookmark Folders extension appears to do what you want.

Hi Tony,

Yep, it do what I want. It adds a “right-click option” called “Locate”, when working in the bookmarks pane. Selecting Locate on a bookmark in the search result will show the “tree view” down to the place that holds the bookmark.

In the Organize Bookmarks window it also adds an icon “Locate” with the same function.

The add-on/extension, as it seems, hasn’t been developed much lately, bumped maxversion #, at Fx 2 time 2006, some update at Fx 1.5 time etc. But it works.

As someone commented on the d/l page, or discussion page, it would be nice if this was included in Fx, or showing the folders when doing the search. But there is problem with that since the search result can scattered between folders thus it could be a cluttered result (until one types enough into search to get down to a few).
