I’m looking for a simple Freeware program that will allow me to list ( and edit ) my personal financial items like Bank Accounts, Insurance Policies, Money Market Funds, etc. This will give me a basic printout of assets in one location.
What I need is one single source list of these things, without having to show “hard goods” items like household furniture, collections and miscellaneous items as such. I know there are many inventory progs out there that would be used for insurance purposes or room by room item lists. I did a brief google search but seem to come up with a pile of the latter programs with a lot of bloat in them.

Any suggestions that I could try out?

I thought about using a SS but that would mean multiple pages. One of the things I’m trying to avoid. There has to be some canned program out there to do this?

Have you looked at MSN Money – Stock portfolio, investment portfolio, financial portfolio?

I would second, but modify, Joe’s suggestion to use a SS . The modification is simply to put all your data on a single worksheet. If you do not want to roll your own there are many templates available for download. You can look here here , for example. The template can be modified if it does not exactly fit your needs. One example is attached.

Because a lot of that type of information is confidential and an avenue for identity theft, and many of the items have PINs or passwords, consider using password encryption software such as Password Safe.

Bob, I have not explained it well, and consequently I think you missed my point. Applications like the ones Alan and I mentioned are designed as collective repositories of all that kind of data, and are encrypted and password protected. Although they re designed to keep passwords and make it easy to remember and use passwords, you can keep most any kind of data in there, such as (in my case), passport number, drivers license, US social security numbers of family members, mortgage loan number, brokerage account numbers, vehicle VIN numbers, software product codes and key codes, professional society membership numbers, frequent flyer numbers, and other information which will not require a password but which should not be public. Check out free Password Safe at SourceForge, and Alan’s suggested program; they may fit the bill … or not.

As an add on note to this string. After looking into Money, I decided to stay with Quicken for my financial stuff, and made my own SS for other items.
you can of course encrypt Quicken, but I take it one step further and have located the data files on an external HD, I use Password Protect USB to add another layer of encryption to the folder, and I also use Steganos Password Manager to store my different passwords for banks etc. You need the Master Password to open the password manager of course. Neither of these are free, but they aren’t expensive either, and there is no limit on the file size that I can protect. Password Protect USB & Steganos

I, too, would recommend the approach suggested by John and Alan. Personally I use a program called Access Manager 2. One ‘master’ password opens the program to reveal everything you want to store in it… I use it for credit card info, financial accounts, soc. sec. numbers, passport info, and all that kind of stuff. In addition, it provides a very simple interface for accessing the appropriate web sites for everything important to you and a quick way to feed in your usernames and passwords.

There is a paid version of the program that allows you to run it from a memory stick. That wasn’t important to me, so I’ve been using the free version for four years. Here’s additional info from their site:

One ‘Master Password’ is all that is needed to access all your passwords and private information.

Regardless of which “canned” program you decide to use, you’re going to be typing in a fair amount of personal data (addresses, account numbers, etc.). This program has several fields for data entry and a very cool “notes” area for additional info. If you type a web address into the notes area, it will become an active link to the webpage. I’ve included a screen shot with fake data that shows the type of info you could store. The proggys recommended by Alan and John are probably similar or better .

For secure storage and web access to accounts etc. I’d go with JohnBF’s suggestion of KeePass Password Safe. I use it for autologin to secure account sites. It has provision for “freeform” notes for each account/ entry, perhaps for current balance etc.

How about OneNote?

You can have just one page showing all the info and then password just that folder.

Just to bring things up to date.

I think I have settled on a SS that is a “canned” sheet included in the Open Office Suite.
It seems to fit the bill with only minor modifications.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. I will keep them in mind if I decide to change.
