This may turn out to be one of those things that everyone except me knew about. I have a question about a toolbar button (Filled Grid) that appears to have no purpose. This ‘mystery’ button isn’t contained on any of Excel’s built-in toolbars. It is the second last item in the list of Format commands (Tools, Customize, Commands, Format) in the toolbars Customize dialog. I had never noticed this command before so I did some searching but found nothing other than 2 or 3 other people wondering what the command was for but no answers. Nothing on the Microsoft website. Nothing in Excel Help. Do you happen to know anything about the Filled Grid command?

AskWoody LoungerJune 27, 2008 at 6:26 pm #1114765As you’ve read – turns out it most certainly is NOT a very important button – I’m convinced the people or person who decided to make this particular button available to all of us – and then not tell us of its existence and – to add insult to injury – make it do nothing of any consequence – sits alone in the dark at night and comes up with stuff like this – AND they’re the same people who write the instructions for “some assembly required” items . . .
Enjoy the weekend

AskWoody LoungerJune 27, 2008 at 6:05 pm #1114758If you goto Tools, Customize, Commands, Format and press description it tells you what it does:
“Toggles the Draw Border Button to Draw Border Grid”The “Draw Border” button turns the cursor into a pencil and allows the users to draw in excel. When the button is the “Draw Border” it just outlines the selected range with a border around the end (like the “Outside Borders” button does to the selected region.
When toggled to the “Drow Border Grid” the outlined area has the outer borders as well as all internal borders added (like “All Borders” does to the selection.
The “Draw Border” button is on the “Borders” Toolbar (underneath the “Filled Grid” tool in Tools, Customize, Commands, Format ) and the “Draw Border” button by itself is a few items above the “Filled Grid” item. If you add both the Filled Grid and the “Draw Border” items to the toolbar, you can press the “Filled Grid” button to toggle the “Draw Border” button.
Why it is needed is unclear, since the “Draw Border” button has an arrow which allows one to toggle it directly, perhaps in the past this ability of the buttons was not available.
