Fill-in field update at print (2002 SP2)

Wow (no pun intended), I seem to be bashing these forums recently!

I have a template that prompts for 2 fillin fields to put references in the headers.

My printing options do not have “Update fields” checked and yet, when I ask to print, the fillin fields are fired off.

According to this post: Newsgroup reply, this setting should ensure that the fields do not update.

So why are they?

Hi Paul:
Unchecking that option will prevent the fill-in field from updating IF the field is in your main document. If the field is in the header/footer, it will update anyway. The suggestion in the newsgroup is to use the listed macro to replace the FilePrint command. The macro should be placed in the template upon which the document with fill-in fields is based. i.e. the recommendation is to base all documents that contain fill-in fields on templates other than normal.dot.

Well, I have it from WD2000: Some Fields Are Updated While Other Fields Are Not. Word 2002 probably has a similar article.
