Thanks, Deanna. This could be very valuable but I have a question. What format are the compressed files in? The article didn’t make it clear (at least to me) whether the compressed files would remain in the same format (pdf, docx, jpg) as the originals. If the compressed files end up at .zip or another functionally equivalent format, that would be less useful for me. Thanks for all the good info you provide!

It works through the list of files you give it, opening, compacting and saving in the same format. I recently did a stack of Word .docx format. Average saved file was about 74% of the original file. Originals were sent to the recycle bin, so you could recover from there if needed.

Two of the files were around 15Mb. The save result was about 12Mb. Dates in Explorerย  will change. Content Created property and Date Last Saved remain the same within file properties. I cannot say how it treats other file formats (but can say is did not process Word .doc files)

          Kevin,

There is a setting in Options to keep the file metadata.

Nice program, but not getting much compression out of it. See the screenshot.

I seem to get much better compression from the free Adobe compression online, but you can only do maybe 2 a day before they shut you off.

        Dave,

There is no change in the file extension. It just compresses then so they take up as little space as possible. It does not change their function.

I love reading your columns and all the crazy things you guys dig up around the web; memories of the “old days” for sure. Just wish I had the time to play with so many delightful doodads, but haven’t recently! Keep on keepin’ on!
