FileName field not updating? (Word 2000 SR-1)

Hi Everyone,

We have documents created in Word 97 that include the FileName field in the footer. This field has always been updated automatically when the document file name is changed. Now we are using the same field in Word 2000, but the field is never updated unless you manually update it. I have looked at the fields in the docs created in 97 and those in 2000 and the field looks exactly the same, but the field in the 97 docs update automatically, while the fields in the 2000 docs do not!! Anyone else notice this and have any suggestions for fixing it??

Fields in the header and footer should always update automatically at print time without further action by you. That is the design. But maybe there is a bug.

In this thread from June, the conclusion was “document corruption,” as no specific culprit ever was found.

Maybe someone else will have some ideas if this occurs regularly with a large number of you documents.

Hi Magella:
I have SR-3, but so far as I recall, the behavior hasn’t changed. My filename fields in the header/footer update when I open the file; they do not update automatically if they are in the body of the document. I don’t know the answer, but would try to replace the fields; i.e. delete & redo the fields & see if there’s a change. I don’t have any Word 97 files to test. If you want to upload one of the converted files, after removing any confidential information, I’d be happy to look at it.

Thank you both for your responses. I had tried re-inserting the field, but I was at our headquarters and working on an awful machine – I don’t even know how it was set up! I came back to my own office and read your posts and tried again to reinsert the field, and now it’s working!
