file viewer for Publisher files (Publisher 2000)

I have been given a Publisher 2000 file from which I wish to retrieve text but I only have access to Pub 98 and it won’t open the file.

Any ideas?

Give the file back and ask them to save it as a P98 from P2K. Then when they give it back you can do as you wish with it. If there’s nothing persona; in it any other friend with P2K can do it for you, just don’t pass them any viruses.

There are no viewers for Publisher of any version.

Publisher 1.0, 2.0, 95, 97, 98, 2000 and 2002 are all developed
in a proprietary format which has some intense graphic use. It’s
not very likely that we will see a viewer any time in the near
future.

However, there are workarounds. These work arounds will either require
you or the sender of the Publisher file to have access to Publisher.

Publisher 2002 will allow you to convert the publication to:

1. A graphic, such as jpeg, tif, gif, etc. In Publisher 2002, go to
File>Save As> and in the files of type choose which graphic type you
would like to save the file as. Once saved, you can then email this
file as an attachment. Once the recipient receives the file, they
will only need a drawing/paint program (like MS Paint for example) to
view the file.

2. As an embedded html email. In Publisher 2002, go to File>Send To
mail recipient. You will be prompted “this page only?”, and choose
yes. This will require the use of an Outlook product on your computer
as well as the ability for the recipient to read html/rich text mail.
The subject line is filled in with the name of the publication.

Publisher 2002, 2000, and 98 will allow you to convert the publication to:

1. A gif file for recipients to open in a paint/drawing program. For

2. An *.mht file. An *.mht file can be viewed by recipients using Microsoft
Internet Explorer 6x, 5x and 4x. This also reduces file size for portability.

3. As an .html file which can be viewed in most any browser on the market,
as long as they are version 4.x or greater. For directions, visit:

5. As a *.PDF file. You convert and send your Publisher file to recipients
in PDF format. All they needs is a *.pdf reader, such as Adobe Acrobat 5,
which is free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
To convert your Publisher file, you will need a utility such as Adobe Acrobat,
or even a free *.pdf converter. For a free converter, you can visit:

Hurrah, a solution of sorts . . .
Adobe have created an online application that allows you to submit files in various formats to be converted into a pdf file. One of the formats supported is .pub

Once you’ve signed up for it and activated your account (which can take a few hours), your first five files are converted for free. After that it’s expensive, but the free trial may get you out of a hole.

Hmm, it might work for some situations but not if it involved any of my work data, I’m not releasing any such files to a third party across the web even if it is a big name like Adobe.

I can’t remember how I got round this particular problem now, it was so long ago and it was a one off.
