I am using Word XP in an xp pro sp2 operating system. My question is related to the File / Open box. If I change the view to details and then select the items I want displayed, MS Word holds this setting during the current session. But if I close Word and re-open it, then the File / Open dialog box reverts back to the standard description items of name / size / Type and Date Modified.

I would like to be able to “save” my customized detail view in the MS Word file / open dialog box [ for example, I want to display Name / Date Modified / Title / Subject only] so that it is the same each time I use word. I know that you can save your folder view settings in Windows explorer…is this same “save” feature of a customized view available in the Word file open dialog box?

I am “hopeful” that the answer is not “no”……any suggestions or workarounds are welcome!!! Thanks.

This is a tricky subject. There are many threads about it in the newsgroups. For some people, the preferred setting is preserved between sessions, for others it’s reset each time. As for me, it works consistently on my home PC (Office XP), but at work the setting is frequently lost (perhaps some kind of system policy that overrules my personal settings).
Some people mention that it’s related to the “Remember each folder’s view settings” check box in the View tab of Tools | Folder Options in Windows Explorer. You could experiment by toggling this setting.

        Hans,
Thanks…you have confirmed what I Googled…but I just couldn’t determine whether it could be done, was a bug or the result of some other higher power. I also feel better—because my home computer does hold the setting…but none of the 60 work pc’s “hold” the setting. I “double” as to the IT guy too at work…and we are not using Group policy settings, etc as we are a small organization. So there must be some other “over ride”…I will keep trying. I even tried re-saving my normal.dot , thinking that process may save the setting but no luck. Again thank you for your advice and wisdom. Take care.
