I was opening a file on our network when the desktop I was using seemed to breifly loose connection to the network server the file was located on… long story short it closed by itself and when I tried opening it the VBA contained in the file was gone… This is the file I use to make modifications and updates to and then use it as the platform to generate the executable from… Is there any way to get that code back? the most recent network backup is a few weeks weeks old aand I would hate to lose those changes that are now in the executable.

    thank you
    Kevin

Unfortunately Kevin, when that happens it often means the VBA project is really gone. But there are some possibilities to check out. First, are you still using Access 2007, and do you have SP3 with all the subsequent security patches installed?

The first thing I would do is to set the Read Only flag on the file so it cannot be further corrupted, and make a backup copy. Then I would create a new empty database, and try importing all of the objects from the backup database. That’s a bit of a long-shot if the VBA project is missing, but worth a try. The next thing I would try is to to do a decompile using the command. See Step 4 of Allen Browne’s Standard Recovery Sequence for details of how to do that. At that point his page is probably one of the best, if not the best references for following. With some luck you may get your database back.

The bottom line is you really want to get a backup going that happens at least once a day after your normal working hours. It will save you much pain and grief.

Thank you Wendell, I tried the first part of your response and got an error every time it tried to import any forms from the backup… error stated it could not find first record or there were no related records… it gave me the option to hit “OK” and then attempted to import the next form… 4 out of approx 30 forms were eventually imported… I am attempting the decompile next but was curious about the errors… any idea what that error might relate to, seems strange to talk about records in an error associated with importing forms… all other parts of the database imported fine exept 2 VB modules which I could understand if the VBA is gone

Is it possible that the working file is sitting somewhere in a recycle bin?

I have now tried the second option in your reply Wendell… I believe at this point all is lost… Thank you for your help

I feared that might be the case – the lesson here is painful, but make sure your development directory is backed up daily.
