File History versus restored image

Irecently had occasion to restore my OS drive via an earlier image due to aregistry problem. This was done by booting the PC into a PE environment using athumb drive, then restoring the image with Macrium Reflect. All went well andthe PC operated as it did 11 days prior (this was the last known, good imagebefore the problem). When I went into the File History, all of the filesbetween the image date and the current date were missing. Is there anything youcan think of that would cause this problem? The File History is assigned to adifferent drive letter using 3 USB connected portable drives. This drive wasnot part of the image created or restored.

File history was working fine before the restore procedure on the OS drive. After restoring the OS drive, file history was still operating but all of the history between the restore date and the current date were missing. The file history, and drives, are still operating fine. Can not figure out why the history between those dates disappeared. The file history drive should not have been affected by the OS drive restore process. Any thoughts?

Windows must record the files added to history in a different location to the files themselves and your restore therefore loses data after the restore date.
I knew there was a reason I used a 3rd party backup utility! 🙂

Paul T, I think you hit on something with that thought. The file “markers” on the OS drive were, at one minute, at 02/10 and after the restore, back at 01/31. When the PC was rebooted, the date went back to 02/10, but all of the file history markers were non-existent for that 01/31 to 02/10 time period. Like deleting a file, but it’s still physically on the drive.
I went into the File History drive via Windows Explorer and drilled down into the backed-up files and all of the “missing” files for that time period were still on the backup drive. They were all there, date & time stamped with time of backup info. They just weren’t being recognized by the OS drive registry, data table, or whatever keeps track of the files backed up each time file history runs.
So, bottom line is, they are there but the OS drive just can’t see them.
