Double clicking jpg files no longer opens up my Paint Shop Pro but the MS Photo Editor, although within “file types” the settings are correct. (“D:UtilsPaint Shop Pro 5Psp.exe” “%1”)

I have even removed Photo Ed via “add remove” Office 97 components, and though the check box is empty when I go back in to verify, it still pops up when I double click.

I have done all I can think of to reset this file type to PSP.EXE but to no avail.

    What have I missed?

Open your Registry Editor (Start | Run and type REGEDIT), on the left pane under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT found .jpg folder and double-click it. Under .jpg folder found ShellEx folder and right-click it. From pop-up menu choose delete. Now your association will work. Delete ShellEx folder only!
Remember, all manipulations with Registry are on YOUR OWN RISK.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, following your advice does NOT eliminate the problem and Photo Ed remains the app which opens the files.

This despite the proper values within the “file type” menu where clearly “D:UtilsPaint Shop Pro 5Psp.exe” “%1” is the entry.

        This is quite frustrating.

Enclosed zipped registry settings for JPG files in WinXP without Office installation. Merging this file will eliminate JPG association with PhotoEd.

Here is what I did after the deletion of the ShellEx entry as you directed did not work.

I reinstalled the Photo Editor option from Office 97. Rebooted and then uninstalled the Photo Ed piece.

Upon reboot, the double clicking on the jpg files launched the “What the hell app do you want to use to open these files” menu. I simply browsed to PSP.EXE and now all works as intended. However, during all of this the “File Type” settings never changed from Paint Shop Pro.

When I checked the registry to my surprise, not only were the Shell Ex entries gone as intended, the jpg entry was basically a one liner with vanilla content and the jpeg entry was completely gone.

I also noticed that the gif entry which I had not edited or even checked previously was gone as well.

Double clicking on a gif brought up the dialogue box and I browsed to PSP.

            Another enhancement from Billy G?

            Thank you for your input.

Ooops! You didn’t mention what OS do you have. This is another one for Win2000, I hope it will be good for any versions of Windows.
