• File Explorer shortcut 30 – 45 seconds to open a window

I just told W10 Pro to upgrade itself last night to 20H0 form 2004, it seemed to go ok however I now notice problems I had not previously.

I have quicklaunch shortcut on/next to my taskbar short cut to of the type:

    C:\Windows\explorer.exe /e,/select,h:\Temp
    C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e, /select, Quick access
    C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,/select,C:\Temp

take forever 30 – 45 seconds to open a window. Sometimes I get nothing and then a window will open. Other times an explorer window with a rotating circle thingy and a ‘not responding’ message in the upper left of the top bar. This is very repeatable with the same shortcut even on the Desktop. Shortcuts of the type C:\Windows\explorer.exe work as normal.
This is incredibly annoying to say the least. I am considering going back to 2004 after a sfc amd dism and chhdsk run. I have not heard of anyone with the same problem have I missed something ? Where do I go from here?

      Hi wavy,

Are you seeing Event IDs 1001 or 1002 in the Event Viewer?

It may be that you need to clear the Quick Access cache. I don’t use Windows 10. Yet see the following article which might be of some help.

      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-files/windows-10-windows-explorer-hang-event-id-1001/17a47ddc-8074-4d41-a632-299b05e32c5f

It looks like the purpose of your quicklaunch shortcut is to compare the contents of temp folders on drives C: and H:? It also appears that your quicklaunch shortcut is not using separate processes for explorer? Perhaps you need to use the /separate switch in your shortcut’s command line. See:

      https://winaero.com/file-explorer-command-line-arguments-in-windows-10/

If your purpose is to compare the contents of the two temp folders and perhaps to sync them or to copy files back and forth between them, then I highly recommend using ViceVersa Pro. I can’t live without this extremely versatile utility.

      Best regards,

      –GTP

I was thinking in the same direction. Something like quick access folder, that is unavailable anymore. Clearing the cache sounds like a good idea, but as wavy wrote:

Shortcuts of the type C:\Windows\explorer.exe work as normal.

Have you simply tried to run without /e switch?

Should have made it clearer that was 3 different shortcuts, the formatting did not work out right.

I did not notice a lot of 1002 or 1001 events however I did notice many many

Mostly yesterday and a couple the day before and today.
And now the shortcuts are working just fine.

I am so glad thay Windows is now a ‘self healing’ Operating System 😁
