I have a user who edits text files for a milling machine using Notepad. In the past, he was able to click on the file and it would open in Notepad. Since he’s changed computers, the association is no longer there and he has to deal with the “Open with” dialog every time. Checking the “Always use this program…” box has no effect. Attempting to actually set up the file association through Explorer seems impossible since the files have no extension. (This is necessary for compatibility with the milling machine.) The fact remains that this association worked in the past. He’s using Win 98 SE.

It’s probably an obvious fix, but I’m missing it. Any suggestions?

Not a solution but maybe a workaround?

Add NotePad to the Send To directory and then use “right click” and Send To ?

Thanks, Terry – It’s a pretty good stop-gap. It speeds things up a little and is WAY less annoying.

Thanks for the suggestions, MerC –
Restoring a previous registry won’t work. He’s on a different computer.

I DO have Xteq on my own system. I checked out the plug-in and it looks like it should do the trick. Since it’s after quitting time, I’ll try it first thing in the morning.
