From the site: “FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.” free

Yes, that’s a very nice freebie. It’s also available in a portable version (no installation required, simply unzip to a folder and run it).

It has been mentioned here before – see post 595,580, but it’s worth a repeat.

Note: starting with version 5.4 (the current version as I write this is 5.5), FastStone Capture is no longer freeware but shareware. You can try it for free during 30 days, after that you have to buy a license (US$ 19.95) providing lifelong free updates.

The last freeware version, 5.3, can still be found, for example here (there are more locations).

I noticed that a while back. Regrettable as it is, I can’t really see any spectacular enhancements in the new payware version, over the last freeware version. Or have I missed something?

The update history on the website lists the changes. As you say, the enhancements in the latest versions aren’t spectacular.

The other offerings from FastStone (Image Viewer, MaxView and Photo Resizer) remain completely free for home use at the moment. No idea what the plans of the developer are.

I guess I’ll have to decide if I want to stick with the last freeware version or pay “up” to the latest. I can’t find my post where I recently admitted that I’ve only recently started using this capture program and I LIKE it a lot. It seems to work well with my TSR ClipMate which I MUST have for normal copy-paste stuff. I really like the rectangle selection capturing and have had an easier time posting attachments here in The Lounge.

[/indent]I sent an enquiry email to them and within a few hours had an answer from a fella named Andrew who said they really needed to make some money in order to keep on keepin’ on, as the saying goes. So, they decided to charge something for the capture program in order to keep the others as freeware. He didn’t say so, but I’d wager that the capture program is probably their best (seller?) of the lot. I was really not expecting an answer at all, let alone that quickly!
