For some reason, this doesn’t whet my appetite.

      United Kingdom

A peculiarly British form of fast food is the sandwich. Another popular fast food is fish and chips which was originated in the United Kingdom. It consists of deep-fried fish (traditionally cod or haddock) in batter or breadcrumbs with deep-fried chipped potatoes.

      Cod, not in these parts!!

I was trying to find good old fish fingers recently, and was amazed how difficult it was to find Cod. Fishfingers have been replaced with all sorts of different names these days, “Fishermans catch”, “Catch of the day”…… Even Good Old Captain Birds Eye has renamed Cod fishfingers to “Omega 3”, look at the small print and you find everything is now POLLOCK! Yuck!

Cod has become scarce and expensive, so you won’t find it in cheap fish products any more. Pollack/pollock is not bad, though, and for the moment there’s plenty of it.

        I also like Jackson Pollock…

Plenty of COD on Cape Cod! Pricey now but still available.

I’m told by some commercial fishermen here that they have a big market for dogfish or sand shark, to be used in fish ‘n chips in the UK. Just telling you what I’m hearing!

As a young soldier in Germany I can say I never went hungry!

On my first overseas assignment I spent time in Izmir, Turkey (not on your link) and the favorite food sold by street vendors is shish kebob, (sp?) very low priced and also quite tasty. I never will forget being told, as a newcomer, that one shouldn’t partake because the meat was probably cat or dog. But when you’ve been having a few brews at the NCO club and walking home late at night, that stuff really hit the spot!

UK: What about Kebab vans, and pie shops, and the ‘Hot and Cold Food’ caravans in half the country’s lay-bies?

And for Scotland, they could have mentioned the famous Deep Fried Mars Bar barf
