my takeaway was that we are a gullible
Totally agree!! Was watching the game with family. A young one (30-something) jumped up immediately when he saw the QR code and frantically tried to not to miss clicking it (his phone wasn’t cooperating)!!! I was alarmed and said, “Don’t click it, what are you doing?!!” To no avail. So gullible. So trusting………of what? or who? Big sigh.
Maybe is it somewhat generational?? Me – 60 something didn’t even budge to click. Doesn’t register on my radar. Him 30 something couldn’t wait to get it. For that instance of clicking a QR code. In general people are very gullible (unconcerned about security) and on the elder side – probably more so than the younger (I’m talking to you mom!) : )
Always like a good Defensive Computing article
Two small points:
There is an explanation of the rules for domain names here

Someone who knows the rules, won’t get fooled again.
Hovering a mouse over a ink usually shows where you will end up, but not always. I detailed some of the hovering scams here
Hover a mouse over a link – just don’t trust the results
