I have a Compaq laptop (originally Win 7) and an HP desktop, about 5 years old.

Until Wednesday morning all was well.   Now, with the latest “update”

    1. the resolution on both monitors is all messed up (max 800 x 600)

    2. No more “sleep” mode option.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    thanks

    Sam

First things first: by update, are you referring to going from build 1703 to 1709, or having the monthly (November) updates for your edition of Windows 10 installed by Windows Update?

For now, this sounds to me like a driver issue, and from what I’ve read MS has been aggressive in trying to push driver updates to Windows users through Windows Update.

On the other side of the driver coin, it also could be that you need a newer driver from HP/Compaq for your two computers. Since you say they’re about 5 years old, maybe there’s a newer Win 10 video driver they’ve released that will restore your lost functionality.

But why would it happen just after the newest update was pushed? I have not found newer drivers yet. Will continue to search

      Thanks

You still haven’t specified what you mean with the terms “newest update” and “latest update”, in response to my question in my first reply to you. Is it just the normal monthly update rollup(s) that have KB numbers attached to them, or is it the push from Windows 10 version 1703 to 1709?

As anonymous stated above, you probably have a messed up driver, so Windows found a generic MS video driver and installed that one just to get you up and running. You DO need to go find a video driver for your computer but, first, you need to find out which “flavor” of Windows 10 you have (32 bit or 64 bit) and which release as well, such as version 1703, 1709 or 1607, for example.

Any folks who have Win 10, (any MVP’s @Kirsty, @PKCano, @Noel Carboni or any other site users) please feel free to chime in on just how to find out which version of Win 10 is running on a computer, as I currently only have Windows 7 to go by.

Sounds specifically like you are missing your video driver. Go to the driver site of your computer maker and download and install the video drivers for windows 10 1709 for your computer model. No 1709 specific driver? In that case look for the latest windows 10 video drivers for your model. If they don’t have that either double check that your system officially supports windows 10 (if they don’t have complete drivers then they don’t and it’s: “we wish you good luck finding drivers — suitable drivers may exist”)
