Ever since I switched to a new Windows 11 desktop, my long-reliable HP Deskjet Pro 8600 has been dropping offline. I have found only two solutions, neither tenable for the long run. I can reinstall the printer, which works for a day or so. Or, on my wife’s laptop only, can connect directly to the printer. How can I make the printer stay online?

      …my long-reliable HP Deskjet Pro 8600…

Are you sure of the model and number? Doing a web search for “DeskJet Pro 8600” only turns up results for the OfficeJet Pro 8600. Same goes for a search on HP’s printer support site, there are 4 digit model numbers for the DeskJet line, but none of them are a DeskJet 8600, the only hits are for the DeskJet 9300 series, DeskJet 3600 series, and the DeskJet 6840 series.

If you do indeed have an OfficeJet Pro 8600, there is a driver available for it for Windows 11 that was released on Dec 2, 2021 which is a basic driver that will allow it to do what you need it to, but there are no other bells and whistles for it that might be included in any optional software from HP.

There is also a full-feature software and driver package that was released on May 18, 2022 that…

…includes everything you need to install and use your HP printer. This collection of software includes the complete set of drivers, installer and optional software.

I am mentioning drivers because with a driver that’s not quite right, you can experience some really weird issues, even with reinstalling the printer with the existing driver, so that’s always a good starting place.

I hope this helps if you do indeed have an OfficeJet series printer.

P.S. I’m still getting along fairly well on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 with an old OfficeJet 6000 printer that I have connected via USB to my desktop. Every so often the icon for it in Control Panel up and disappears completely, but turning the printer on restores the icon in a minute or so.

You are right, it’s an Officejet not a Deskjet.  (After all these years I still mix up their names.)  I have been using the new driver you cited since it first came out.  Worked fine on my Windows 10 machine but I have had to reinstall it a dozen times — or more — to keep working under Windows 11.

Does it install itself to a “WSD” port by avy chance?

Susan has a post here titled “WSD printer ports are evil”: https://www.askwoody.com/2024/wsd-printer-ports-are-evil/ and it says her personal preferece is to use a TCP/IP port instead.  Could be worth checking into.

      @WSJohnHop

Given that your printer first came out in 2011, and my printer first came out in 2009, with the symptoms you’ve been experiencing with your 8600 randomly not working with Windows 11 which has been making you reinstall the driver, and the symptom I’ve been experiencing with the printer disappearing from Control Panel rendering it useless for a bit, I believe you and I are being goaded by Windows in different ways to the same end…having to buy a newer printer.  🙁

For mine, I’ve already seen the writing on the wall with an MS statement saying that they will be making a change to their, (I believe) driver structure in 2027, which will officially render my current driver useless.

Your printer might also have the same fate, but I can’t verify it because I’m currently having a senior moment with respect to finding the actual source that I read regarding newer drivers for Windows starting in 2027.

For your printer, to me it sounds like Microsoft may have made a slight change (or two or even more) to the way Windows 11 handles printer drivers compared to the way windows 10 handles them, and this could be due to enhanced security with regards to print driver handling within Windows 11. Since your driver was written not too long after Windows 11 was first released, I have a feeling that this change is affecting the driver, and is making your printer drop off line after a bit.

Check out @Captain-Al ‘s posts above and the links in them to see if you can pick up an idea from Susan’s post he’s linked to. Maybe there’s a way to tell Windows to only use a certain type of port for your printer, which then might make it start working the way it used to with Windows 10.

KEY QUESTION: You haven’t said exactly how your printer connects with your Windows 11 desktop or what type of port it uses when it is connected. That may shed some light on the issue.

Just discovered a hidden cost of moving to Windows 11.

We have been using a Cannon MX-870 scanner/fax/inkjet printer since 2015.

It stopped working after transitioning to Windows 11 Pro from Windows 10 Pro.

In short, Cannon no longer supports the printer and its existing drivers are not compatible with Windows 11.

So, it appears that we will have to acquire a new scanner/fax/printer.

Amazing, all the bad things I’ve read here on this site about Win 11, and yet both home and business consumers are expected to fall lovingly into the clutches of Win 11.

Being 20 something in the 70's was far more fun than being 70 something in the insane 20's

Canon clearly states on their support website that the MX870 is not supported under Windows 11.

You can find the Canon MX870 support pages at,

      https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-mx870

Once there, you can search for drivers for Windows versions 10 and 11.

The Windows 10 search comes up with the driver MX870 series MP Driver Ver.1.06 (Windows) mp68-win-mx870-1_06-ea24.exe that was posted 1/29/16.

A similar search under Windows 11 comes up empty when it comes to drivers.  However, they do list a number of support apps.

The driver that is installed on the system under review is the 1/29/16 (Windows 10) version and it does not work on a Workstation using Windows 11 Pro.

Canon has a list of all of their inkjet printer and scanner models that are compatible with Windows 11 at

      https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/FAQ100626

The MX870 is not included on the list.

The question we are now facing is what is a good replacement for the MX870.  What we are looking for is a high resolution scanner/fax suitable for scanning color documents.

Reviews suggest the scanner/fax is the same, it’s the printer section that determines cost.
Inkjet will be about half the price of laser, unless you want a flash document feeder for the scanner.

        cheers, Paul

At this point it looks as if our best option for continuing the use the scanner/fax functions of our Cannon MX-870 scanner/fax/inkjet printer is to:

      • Connect it to a retired Windows 10 workstation,
      • Scan documents and save files to an external SSD,
      • Then copy the files from the SSD to the misbehaving Windows 10 24H2 workstation, and
      • Wait for Microsoft to fix Windows 11 24H2.
