Failed sync-Palm to Outlook 2007

All of a sudden, I’m having trouble getting my Palm Treo 650 to sync with Outlook 2007.

Facts: The prior installation worked seamlessly: XPSP3 fully patched, Palm Desktop 6.2 (incorporating new conduits to sync with Outlook 2007). A system reinstall became necessary and after the reinstall, the sync wouldn’t work: The HotSync software said it wasn’t compatible with this version of Outlook, only Outlook 2003 and earlier (strange, because the new conduits were specifically to sync with Outlook 2007).

A second system reinstall got things working until I then layered on an installation of Office 2003, excluding Outlook 2003 from the installation. Thereafter, the sync log shows failed syncs.

System Restore reported back that it could not restore back to any of the prior restore points, either ones I expressly created or others automatically created.

Uninstalling Office 2003 had no effect.

Uninstalling .NET 3.5 SP1 had no effect.

When you install Office you should always install the oldest version first then the newer version. When you install in a different sequence strange things can happen.

Consistent with the last post, the fix I stumbled upon was to run Office Diagnostics from the Outlook 2007 Help menu. It fixed/reconfigured whatever needed to be, and Palm Conduits resumed working.

This was a deceptive problem because I was assuming the problem lay with Conduits and not Outlook.

This also was deceptive because an earlier attempt to re-install Outlook 2007 over the existing installation had no effect.
