A really good step forward for Microsoft. It is geographically limited, as the article says. I’m in Canada and was able to download the software from the App Store. While it installed, I could not sign is as “This experience is not currently available in your location”. Oh well.

As I understand it, the beta is geo limited to USA at this time, more countries to come.

Thanks for the extra security topic. I have Malwarebytes Premium on my Win 10 PC and Win Defender Anti Virus using periodic scanning. I also have a subscription to Malwarebytes on my Android Pixel 6 Pro phone. When Apple phones are mentioned in a topic, I would like Android details as well.
      Much appreciated your topics!!!

      Susan,

The question that comes to my mind when I read about this move from Microsoft is why would they do it? What do they have to gain?

    • #2440123

For iPhone, use a regular consumer Microsoft account to log in. (During beta testing, a Microsoft 365 subscription is not required.) Once installed, the app will ask whether you want to set up protection on the device for surfing. Interestingly, to protect your iPhone against harmful links you need to download and use Microsoft’s VPN service to proxy the checking of the sites. Microsoft needs a VPN to check websites through its scanning service before you browse to them.

I would like to have extra security on my IOS devices, but isn’t having MS check every wesbsite I go to a security concern? And what about the MS VPN? Do you know anything about it? I’d have to research it before using it.

No, it’s a means of preventing you accidentally going to a dodgy site. MS Edge in Windows (via SmartScreen) does the same.
A good idea for most people IMO.

      cheers, Paul

I would like to have extra security on my IOS devices,

I wouldn’t let Microsoft on my iPhone, iPad..
      I separate Microsoft’s environment for Apple’s environment.

First install Lockdown (virtual Firewall) and block connecting to Facebook, Google Analytic, Amazon trackers…

Next set iCloud Private Relay and Hide Your IP Address From Trackers in Safari

I had set hide your ip address.  But not private relay. It’s still in Beta…….I set it. thanks.

Also, I clear history and cookies constantly – so I hope/expect that limits tracking.  I do that on my laptop too and when I run Spybot (which I got from Oldergeeks) – it only finds one deprecated cookie. Which it keeps finding (with a different name) every time I run it!

Privat relay works just fine. It won’t crash your devices.
Lockdown app is in my opinion a must have.

Hi I was checking out the Lockdown app.  I understand it has no tracking and collects no user data but I didn’t understand the costs.  Firewall is free. VPN is monthly/annual subscription, correct? Do you use the VPN or just the firewall?

        • #2441701

I don’t use the VPN, just the “firewall” (it is not a real Firewall, just a list of blocked sites..just like AdBlock apps are not firewalls)
          No subscription.

2 days with Lockdown and I can’t believe all the sites that are being blocked, I had no idea it was that bad!!! Yikes.

It’s not bad, it’s that every page has a link to those sites. No need to be paranoid about it.

              cheers, Paul

True. I guess it made me feel like every link was an entity actively tracking me.  It is the potential for tracking and without the block, I was being tracked. I clear history constantly to clear out cookies.

            • #2442345

I have also installed – Hush Nag Blocker

“Browse the web like it should be – free of nags to accept cookies or privacy invasive tracking. It’s tiny, fast, free, open, secure and without any access to your data.

Hush doesn’t have any third party dependencies, behavioral tracking nor crash reporting – no data is collected and nothing leaves your device.

The blocking is done by Safari itself with instructions from Hush, so the app has no access to your browser habits nor does it want to. Don’t take our word for it – we play with open cards and publish the source code for anyone to inspect.

Using Hush is as easy as installing it and enabling it in Preferences -> Extensions. No settings, no maintenance – just thousands of rules doing the hard work for you in the background…

Hush is both free of charge and Open Source with a permissive MIT license. No in-app purchases, no nonsense…”
