External HD not recognized WS 05/21/2014

My computer does not recognize my external 40 GB HD.
Running Win 8.1 (64)
External drive BUSlink USB HD 40 GB
USB connection
Shows power on

Plug in drive to pc USB but drive does not show up in computer
device section. Have tried all 4 USB ports on PC.

Have not used drive for several months or with Win 8.1
Any help appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Have you tested it on another computer?
Plug it in and run Disk Management to view the available disks. In Windows 7 it’s: Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc

Sometimes the USB external hard drives quit working. I have seen at least three fail — two of my own, plus one of a friend.
