      Schonman,

Probably not but I would recommend doing so. It gives the update process less things to worry about and may even help speed up the process.

Always, as a precaution. You don’t want a hiccup making a mess of your data.

Have to agree but do keep in mind you can’t do any work on the computer while the Upgrade process is running so there’s no point in risking a screwup involving the external drives.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

You definitely should disconnect your external drive, as well as any flash drives, before doing the upgrade. You don’t want Windows thinking that the external drive is where it is supposed to install itself.

Yes, especially if you are clean installing. It’s easy enough to do as these external drives are plug and play.

You should also disconnect any other internal drives if you’re clean installing. Quite often the Windows installation will
place some boot files or even a system reserved partition somewhere you don’t want it to.
It’s easier not to risk that scenario than have to clean up the headache it causes afterword.

With the upgrade installation to W10 I didn’t have any problems with any of my other 7 internal drives plugged in.
But with my last years clean install on the newly built system, I definitely only had the primary OS drive plugged in.
