I have favourites (bookmarks) that I have nicely sorted alphabetically in folders and that are alphabetical within those folders. So far so good. I want to publish or forward some of my favourites folders to a club I belong to. When I use the export wizard to export my folders of favourites, (which creates a file called “bookmark.htm”) the favourites within a folder are no longer in alpha sequence. In fact, the folders themselves are no longer alpha sequence.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 10, 2002 at 5:28 pm #562932I’ve never used the export wizard myself but regularly update my favorites folders between home and work by just copying the folder(s) and bookmarks I want to add to whichever list of favorites. By holding down the shift key when clicking on “organize favorites” – your favorites folder will open in windows explorer and you can manipulate the folders and contents as you would any other file/folder on your system – i.e. copy, move, zip etc. On the other machine, the selected files can be copied into the favorites folder using windows explorer as well.
Hope this helps -

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 11, 2002 at 1:50 am #563025What you inadvertantly pointed me to is the fact that it is much easier just finding the favourites folder on my hard drive and then copy & paste at will. The end result is not a htm. file which I would have preferred, but will serve my purpose nevertheless.
What I didn’t understand was “By holding down the shift key when clicking on “organize favorites” – your favorites folder will open in windows explorer “. Where and how to you get to “organize favorites”? In IE if I press the Favorites icon at the top of the page, my Favorites appear in a panel on the left side. If I do as you say and hold down shift while clicking on Organize… nothing unusual happens. The regular Organize Favorites dialogue appears, that’s all. Did you have something different in mind?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 5, 2002 at 9:32 pm #568424Hello Leif —
Following the posts between you and Gladys re Dianne’s problem with organizing, I’m still puzzled. So far the only way I know of to alphabetize the vertical list of favorite bookmarks in the column on the left is by hand, laboriously. This strikes me as excessively primitive. Yet when a folder is added, it’s added at the bottom of the stack. When the ‘Organize Favorites’ button is pressed, either in that column or on the toolbar, everything shows up nicely alphabetized in the window that results, with folders at the head of the list. So the machine must be alphabetizing at some level. Why can’t it do it at the level of constant visibility? Surely the cretins in Redmond thought of this? Maybe not. Go ahead. Disillusion me. Thanks in advance, Dave -

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 6, 2002 at 1:54 am #568471If you drop down the Favorites menu, and right-click, you can Sort by Name. The Favorites pane then also should be sorted by name. This is a one-time re-shuffling that must be re-run periodically (as with the Programs section of the Start menu). Perhaps there is a secret setting somewhere in Windows that makes automatic sorting the default behavior, but I’m not aware of it. (P.S. I use 5.5 SP2)

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 6, 2002 at 2:38 am #568478Thanks very much, Jscher, and I will burn this into my own brain’s memory. It used to be that everything worked easily, and I still have Norton Commander on my machines for serious work. How, how, how, can I go back to 5.5? The old world was so much better, when MS things worked more than half the time. I recently re-installed 98SE, believing the recommendation of the blue screen of death, but that didn’t get rid of IE6.2 and it didn’t get rid of whatever new downloaded version of OE is now on my poor computer. Re Leif’s advice, why does MS recommend that 98SE users “upgrade” if the systems don’t work when combined? How’s that for too many questions? Thanks, really, again. Dave

There have been many threads on this topic during the past few months, and I think I posted in one of them, but I’m not sure I saw a definitive answer that it worked. I encourage you to surf through and if you find a promising message, post a follow-up to see if it worked.
