When working with windows explorer often the names of the folders in the left pane will disappear. The folders cannot be opened or manipulated in any fashion. We have noticed this on 3 computers running Windows NT with SP6. A search of Microsoft KB gives no help. I suspect some sort of resource issue. Does any one know how to fix this.

Does Task Manager show up anything in the way of unreasonable resources being used?

(The status bar at the bottom should show resources used/available, and under the Processes tab you can select Memory and VM columns)

I though myself it might be some type of resources issue however, there are no untoward processes running. Simply closing explorer and opening again reverts it back to normal until it occurs again.

Did this just start happening? What was changed on the PC?

Both PC’s have recently been reimaged with ghost but from different images. Then some extra upgrades were done to (NT service pack 6a, IE 6.01 SP1). The problem was noticed soon after this.

Can you delete the iconcache file? Has someone changed the pagfile settings?

Have tried deleting the icon cache file – but still the same. The page file settings haven’t been saved.

My first guess would have been free space in your temporary directory, and possibly even an issue with Internet Explorer’s cache filling up the space that it is assigned.

What are the commonalities between the workstations? Are these all identical hardware? How was Windows installed, from a ghosted image, or other?

The PC’s have differnet hardware spec’s (from different manufacturer’s even). Software is virtually the same except for version of MS Office. However, we have other PC’s with same hardware and similar software that do not have this problem. The PC’s have been reimaged recently but from different images. Then I updated the NT service pack to 6 and IE to 6.01 SP1. The problem occured soon after this. I have deleted all temp files in Windows and IE. Problem is still there.

Does a reboot cause the problem to disappear? How much real memory does each PC have? (Other questions have been asked previously!)

I have seen this problem happen very occasionally, usually after the workstation has been doing lots of intensive work and/or when it hasn’t been rebooted for weeks…

Simply closing explorer and reopening again cures the problem for a little while. Opening a word document, spreadsheet or other seems to trigger the problem.
