Can anyone tell me how (in Win 7) to exit and shut down without using the mouse?

For years in windows XP, I have simply typed Windows (key), then u, then u to shut down. 3 key strokes. quite fast.

    Signed . . . no mouse lover me . . . or track pad

      Have you tried
Alt+F4 then after a brief while I am presented with a window asking something like
“What do you want to do now?” with the Shut Down option selected and
      I press “Enter”

Does that count as two or three key strokes?
      Cheers

Well, if you have an app (or more) open, the Alt+F4 will simply close the active app.

Okay! I worked on it last night, and I find the following suits me:

Windows key, tab key, tab key,

Four key strokes, practically three cause tab,tab is so fast.

        Thanx to those who replied.

Shutdown.exe is located in the System32 directory. You could create a shortcut on your desktop (right click on file) and then drag it to the Quick Launch area of your taskbar.
Here is a complete list of Win7 shortcuts:

Howdy! I have two shortcuts on my desktop for restarting and shutting down my computer. I leave them on the desktop because that requires TWO clicks. You could pin them to the taskbar, but a single accidental click at the wrong time could prove disasterous (don’t ask me how I know this ).

For Desktop Shutdown and Restart Shortcuts, create new shortcuts and paste the commands listed below.

      Shutdown:

      %windir%system32shutdown.exe -s -t 01

      Restart:

      %windir%system32shutdown.exe -r -t 01

Then change the icons to those in the attached zip file or other icons of your choosing.

      Hope this helps!

Well, first off, you need to make a Desktop shortcut to shutdown.exe.

Here’s the “Quick Shutdown” shortcut that works great for Vista and Win-7.
Just copy and paste this line into a desktop shortcut and you’re almost done.

      %windir%System32shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

Then in the shortcut’s Properties you need to set up a Keyboard shortcut.
Pick a key combination that’s not used for some other purpose.
      Finis!

I use the desktop Quick Shutdown shortcut exclusively to shut down my
own PC and I share it with all my friends and customers. They love it!
One click + eight seconds and the PC is OFF!

      Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
