We have one company who will email us and their email will insert a ✉ icon in the subject title. Normally this isn’t a big deal but if our employee attaches that email into our BMS, it somehow corrupts the client file attachments. Basically our BMS cannot recognize that icon, it then changes it to a ? mark and the only way to fix it is to go into a special database utility to remove that question mark (a time consuming process). So I was wondering how I could create a rule within Microsoft Exchange that somehow strips that icon out of the subject title entirely.

So something like “if ✉ is in the subject title from company.com, then delete the ✉ icon but leave the rest of the subject line and email alone”. Hopefully that makes sense

I don’t believe you are going to be able to do this in Office 365 and even on-prem it would be challenging (you’d have to write a “transport agent”).

However, you should be able to do this with Outlook easily, one manual way and one automated. The manual way is just to open the message and edit the subject, removing the offending character.

The automated way is more complicated. Write a rule that executes a VBA routine when a message comes in with the offending character. In the VBA, update the subject and save it.

Lots of examples of VBA are available on the web.
