I recently “upgraded” to Office 2021 and noticed that it’s hard to impossible working with multiple spreadsheets. Running task manager to see what’s going on I can see that opening more than one spreadsheet quickly moves up the needle on memory usage and the program becomes quite unresponsive.

I am running Office Professionl Plus 2021 on a Win 10 with 32gb memory and did not have any issues on my prior 2016 version. Some of my spreadsheets are large and use formatting and I am aware that this can cause issues. I regularly try to clean excessive formatting etc but since the move to 2021, the problem is quite different. I read somewhere that using the 64 bit version of Excel might help but I can’t see what version (32/64bit)  I am running at the moment. Memory keeps climbing to over 25mb even when running only one sheet and no action is being done, something is not releasing memory again.   I even tried Softmaker and while this program does not seem to have the memory issue, it lacks the ability to sort or filter by colour that I need.

Anyone able to provide some advice on how to make my excel responsive again?

To see the version information in Excel go to File | Account | About Excel. Ir is possible the 64-bit version would handle your spreadsheets better. AFAIK, Microsoft has never given a size where 64-bit would be better.

Also, make sure you are up-to-date with Office patches.

thank you Joe, looking at this I am already using the 64-bit version – what concerns me is that it seems the older versions of Office/Excel were less likely to choke.  I still have some pc running 2007 and they seem not to mind the formatting. At the moment I am working with 2021 on mine (walking on egg shells) and running planmaker as a backup. Planmaker seems fine with resources but there are some settings I can’t find quickly being used to excel and some functions they apparently do not yet provide (like sorting or filtering by colour).
