Excel stops responding (Excel 2003)

Excel hangs when trying to change directories or open files on my Mom’s computer. It finally responds after about 60 seconds. I looked through the knowledge base, and it refers to Excel 2003 hotfix. Will this help with this issue? She has 512mb RAM and is running WinXP. She does not seem to have any other difficulties with other Office apps. She has the Office Pro 2003 package. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I guess when the KB suggests a hotfix, that is the way to go. But I haven’t had this problem, nor applied the fix, so I have no experience with the problem.

I just want to make sure that the hotfix is applicable. After reading the documentation, it was kind of hard to tell, and you have to contact MS to get it. It says to only use it for that specific problem. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=833855%5B/url%5D

There is one fix in that package that could remotly deal with the problem you described. The description specified an .xml file, but it might also happen on .xls files.
