I’ve been using Microsoft 365 since long before it was Microsoft 365.  My Excel recently started having troubles.  I tried to open a file and it displayed an error dialog: “Excel ran out of resources while attempting to calculate one or more resources.  As a result, these formulas cannot be evaluated.”  The error repeats about 20 times.  It doesn’t give any hints what the problem is or where the problem formulas are.

I also see errors in the spreadsheet where, as it said, it didn’t evaluate the values properly.

This is a fairly modest spreadsheet, 189kb in size, 5 tabs.  The only interesting thing about it is that it uses STOCKHISTORY to pull stock data.  I’ve been working with it for over two years and I never had this problem before.

I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling M365.  No improvement.  Help?

    Running on Windows 10 Pro.

Right, sorry.  I forgot I was supposed to note if I posted elsewhere.

Since you already uninstalled & re-installed Excel, it is a good idea to make a backup copy of your spreadsheet before troubleshooting. Do you have an older backup or copy of your spreadsheet and if yes, does that copy work properly? There are reports of the STOCKHISTORY function not working this past week and giving Connect errors. If you search for “stockhistory does not work” (without the quotes) and limit your search to 1 week you should find several recent articles. Not sure if that is relevant to your resource problem. I have an older version of Excel & cannot use STOCKHISTORY for obtaining stock quotes. I have found that minor (IMO) modifications in my spreadsheet can lead to multiple formula errors. Because of this I always make a copy of my spreadsheet before making any changes. I occasionally have issues with my spreadsheet turning white and giving a not responding message. Opening and closing the spreadsheet generally fixes that issue.

The error repeats about 20 times.

Suggest you eliminate possible drive issues.  When odd issues happen over and over with software you know well, drive health can/might be a contributor.  Better to know than guess.

Close all open apps, then from an admin CMD window paste in and run each of these command lines ONE at at time.  Let each process finish completely before running the next one.  If it doesn’t help, at least you’ll know your drive is healthy and not part of the problem.

      chkdsk /f
      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
      sfc /scannow

The problem appears to be isolated to this one file, and to the tab that had the STOCKHISTORY call.  Since Excel didn’t offer any hints as to what caused the error, I just deleted the offending tab and rebuilt it from scratch.  That seems to have fixed it.
