• Excel keeps randomly crashing

    This has been an on going issue for almost 3 years. I hate to think the numerous hours I have spent trying to find the issue plus I know MS has spent numerous hours/days only to leave my computer in worse shape when they are done causing me more hours to correct whet they messed up. I have Windows 7 and 8.1 both with Office 2013, 64 bit, solid state drives, 16 GIGS and icore 5 and 7 so I have the power needed. This is the most recent crash which happened a few minutes ago.

    Any suggestions is appreciated. I’ve tried most of the things on MS forum. Now, I do use a lot of conditional formatting but it will crash on a sheet within a book when I try to do a simple cut and paste. Copy and paste is no issue. Opening a new sheet to do a cut and paste is also not an issue. It seems to happen in my books with a Macro more often. Then again, when I run the same application on Office 2010 or even Vista which has 2007 I have no issues

      I tried both applications and my Macro is getting hug up still which will happen before it crashes or I have to crash it because if not it will sit and spin for hours. The weird thing is it was working fine for about an hour and then decided to sit and spin.

      I guess what I am saying is even trying these 2 methods I still have the same issue

    • #1541629

      After it sat and spun for 10 minutes, I hut escape , the screen goes to gray shade and nothing else happens. I go to “X” it out and get this error

      • #1541638

        not sure why that smiley is in there, its not in my Macro

      • #1541640

        Sometimes I will get a debug error but can not seem to find how to fix this or what exactly it is

      This is the only Macro in the book

      Sub ResetBackToGame()
      Dim d As Double:
      d = Application.WorksheetFunction.CountIf([i2:i101], “?”)
      Dim i As Integer:
      ‘make sure user entered positive number 1 to 50 into Q5
      If IsEmpty(Range(“Q5”)) _
      Or Range(“Q5”) 50 Then
      ‘do nothing if is empty or value not between 1 and 50, inclusive
      Exit Sub
      End If
      i = 50 – [q5]
      Application.ScreenUpdating = False
      [I2:O101].Copy Cells(3 + i – d, 9) ‘copies I2:O101 to position (3+i-d) rows down.
      Range(“i2”, Cells(2 + i, 15)) = “?” ‘puts ? in I2 over & down to cleared row in O.
      [i102:o152].Clear: [q5].ClearContents
      Application.ScreenUpdating = True ‘not required, auto-resets to True at End Sub or Exit Sub
      End Sub

      Now here is the strange part. I have just put office 2013 on the same computer and it opened the file just fine. It will do this. If it crashes in 2010 I can open it in 2013. If it crashes in 2013 I can open it in 2010 and it will work fine until it decides to crash

    • #1541758

      That looks like a missing reference to VBA in Excel.

      As you know, the VBE7.DLL issue has been around for a long time.

      It would be interesting to see if it occurred on a machine that had both a clean install of Windows and Office, with nothing else.

      What should I do to my registry?

    • #1541778

      Nothing.

      You mentioned you had tried both options in the link from post #2.

      One was a registry change mentioned in Method 2 in that link.

      When you make registry changes, you should of course backup the registry first, make the change, and reboot.

      Ah, I did not do the registry change in method 2. Instead I unchecked compile on demand.

      Should I try the registry change!

      I’ll go do a search for the dll and let you know. Thanks for helping

    • #1541802

      Do a search and see how many copies of VBE7.DLL you have on your system.

      See if there is one that is more current than the version posted in the Event log.

      Is Office/Excel up to date on patches?

      it looks like I have 4 all together but there 2 of each I think. What should I do? delete 2 of them or all of them?

      I installed Office 2013 to see if the file that was crashing in 2010 would open in 2013 and it did. I was able to close the same file and reopen it in 2010 with no issues. This is the norm for this too and its been driving me crazy to figure out why its like this

    • #1542649

      I had similar problems, and eventually found that the reason was that the process was using ~2GB of memory (as shown in Task Manager) even though the file was a bit under 1 MB. Randomness apparently resulted from details of preceding memory allocations. I was able to break the file into numerous smaller ones with inter-file links, and the problem was solved. This was with 32-bit Excel, while I think you are using 64-bit Excel, but maybe someone forgot to change some variable in Excel from DWORD to QWORD or equivalent. If all else fails, maybe this possibility is worth checking.

    • #1542660

      I have … Office 2013, 64 bit

      I recommend you uninstall Office 64-bit and install the 32-bit version. 32-bit is recommended by MS and most other experts, unless you have a specific known need for 64-bit. 32-bit software works just fine on a x64 PC.

      Lugh.
