When I use the Page Setup option to fit a printout to one page wide, Excel ignores my page breaks and breaks the pages where it wants to. (The breaks are before where Excel breaks so fitting is not an issue.) Is there a way to force Excel to not ignore the page breaks?

Page Breaks and Page Fitting are mutually exclusive features. Try naming specific ranges to print.

When the Page Setup option is selected as “Fit to [1] page(s) wide by [1] pages tall”, page breaks are ignored.

To use page breaks down the sheet, set the option as “Fit to [1] page(s) wide” and blank the box for “by [ ] pages tall”. To blank the box, select the number in the box and press the delete key. See attached graphic. (Instructions are vice versa if you want one page tall, multiple across, and your page breaks are vertical, across the sheet)

Another choice is to set the percentage to a number less than 100%.

That number should be small enough so that the printout only covers one page wide.

I believe Excel will honor page breaks with this scenario.

As already remarked, page breaks and fitting to page don’t seem to go together.

My usual way round the problem is to set up the Fit to page (usually for width only) and click OK to leave Page Setup. Assuming the print area is already defined, if you then re-enter Page Setup, the Adjust to percentage will have been recalculated to the same scaling as the Fit to page would give. Check that instead and click OK again.

Warning: the calculation does very occasionally go wrong – this is either a matter of the print area and print titles overlapping or of hidden columns in the print area. If and when this happens, then you need to find the appropriate Adjust to percentage by trial-and-error.
