I don’t use Excel very much, but last night when I launched it, I got an error message (attached). I seem to recall some time ago something similar happened to me with Word, but I cannot find that post (is the Search function currently disabled?) Whatever it was, I was able to fix it based on someone’s response. Anyone here know the reason for this error message and what I have to do to fix it?

2. Write down all that are checked
3. uncheck them all
4. Check one add-in
5. restart Excel
6. If the problem is still there, you found the offending one
7. If no error, repeat from step 4My guess would be that it is an add-in whose file is called pdfwrite.xla, installed by Acrobat reader.

If you have Norton Anti Virus, and have the Office Plugin enabled, I recommend disabling it. It is not necessary.

No NAV, but I did have the pdfmaker.xla file in the Excel startup. I have now moved it to My Documents (as the MSKB suggested) and Excel now opens and closes without any error message. But what I am supposed to do with that file? Can I just delete it? What does it do? Thanks for the link.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 17, 2003 at 8:53 am #694278PDFMaker.xla is an Excel add-in that can be used to convert Excel spreadsheets to PDF files. Apparently some versions of this add-in can cause problems, and as the MSKB article says, a newer version should be available from Adobe.
For the moment, I wouldn’t throw away the .xla, just leave it in a place where it doesn’t do harm. If you get a new and improved version from Adobe, you can delete the old one. -
