I have attached an excel spreadsheet which has an example of a drop-down list that changes colour with each selection. Could you please explain how I can create this example on another spreadsheet.
Thank you..Susan Schade

There are two elements that work together here:
The dropdown list is due to validation:
– Select cell D7.
– Select Data | Validation.
– You will see that “Allow” is set to “List” and that the Source consists of the entries G, Y and R.
– Activate the second tab of the dialog.
– Here you see the text of the message that appears when you select the cell.
– Activate the third tab of the dialog.
– Since the “Style” is set to “Stop”, the user MUST select an entry from the list.
– You see the text of the message that appears if you try to enter something else.
The background color is due to conditional formatting:
– Select cell D7.
– Select Format | Conditional Formatting…
– The dialog contains three conditions, one for each of the list entries.
– In this example, the conditions are simple: the cell value must be equal to G, Y or R.
– It is also possible to specify more complicated conditions using a formula: select Formula Is in the dropdown on the left.
– Click the Format… button to see how the format is specified (here in the Font tab and in the Pattern tab)
You can specify up to three different conditions.
