• Excel Charts only partly print

On my new computer, purchased in the summer of 2019, when I go to print a chart in Excel the print preview shows the whole chart to be printed on 1 page, but when printed on either of my printers or to a pdf all that is printed is the top left hand corner of the chart, which fills the whole page.

On a spread sheet page there is the option Fit to 1 page by width and tall under page layout then scale to fit but that option is not there for chart sheets.

This very frustrating, any suggestions would be appreciated.

@foothills-dave, you don’t seem to say which Excel version you are running, or your OS.
Are you trying to print only your graph, or the worksheet page with the graph?

If you are printing the worksheet page: When you do a print preview, then return to your spreadsheet, where do the page lines lie? is your graph within the designated page area?
Even when mine isn’t, by clicking Fit Sheet on One Page, it all prints. (Scaling options are available for printing the worksheet, not the graph itself.)

I am using Office Home & Basic 2019 on Widows 10 version 2003 64 bit.  My old computer where I did not have the problem was Windows 7, with Office 2013 I think.

Each graph is on its own worksheet by itself.  Print Preview shows the whole graph on 1 page, ready to go but when printed it only prints the top left corner of the graph.  On the spread sheet pages there is the option Fit to 1 page by width and tall under page layout then scale to fit but that option is not there for chart sheets, I assume because (based on the print preview) it is only one page.

My work around has been to bring up the print preview, then print screen, then paste into a photo editing program, then cropping it and saving it as a jpg or pdf.

Sorry Dave, I don’t have access to Office2019.

I suggest you have a play with these two MS Office support pages’ hints, especially the page setup setting for Fit to Page:

        Print a chart
Excel for … 2019-2013, 365 (also 2007/10 on same page)

        Fit to one page
        Excel for … 2019-2013, 365, web

A work around for the Excel printing problem is to block and copy the cells or chart you want to print and then past them into a Word document.

Not an ideal solution but it works in a pinch.

      A couple of questions.

      1. Have you ever been able to print Excel sheets using your, “Office Home & Basic 2019 on Widows 10 version 2003 64 bit” PC?
      2. Are you having problems printing Word documents?
      3. Are you using Adobe Acrobat or other third party PDF software to to print or the PDF creator built into Microsoft products?

      Kathy,

Sorry to be so slow to respond.

Everything worked on my old computer using the old version, documents print fine, just not the graphs, either jpg or pdf.

However:  The work around copying to Word worked, which lead me to discover that coping to another worksheet also worked, the first time.  Which sort of accidentally let me to a very easy work around.  If before I print the chart, in the print settings, before printing I switch to portrait, then back to Landscape, the chart prints perfectly.  But I do have to do it each time.

I have no idea why that works, but it does.  Go figure.

Thank you Kathy and Kirsty for your help.
