Still using Office 97 at work (on Windows 98 2nd Ed.) and my Excel has a problem that seems to occur randomly. Sometimes when I open a spreadsheet and click on a cell and release the button, it does not release the “select” function. Wherever I move the mouse even with no buttons pressed, it selects all the cells I move over as if I had continued to hold the mouse button as I moved. There is a second part to this problem. If instead of clicking on a cell, I click on the worksheet tab to select another worksheet, then it locks in that function. Most of the time there is no way out of this situation. I have to exit Excel (using End Task) and I have to reboot the computer altogether. If I just exit and reopen Excel, the problem is still there.

It’s been like this for quite some time and I’ve learned to live with it. Most of the time it works just fine but sometime this problem will happen and I’ve seen no pattern to indicate why. It is not related to any specific Excel file. At one point, I even had the hard drive on the computer wiped clean and reinstalled Windows and Office and the problem resurfaced a short time later.

I’m wondering if anyone else has seen this and has any ideas on what is causing it.

Do you have a mouse with a wheel? If so, next time it happens, try clicking the wheel and see if that gets you out of select mode.

For this reason, I have used the mouse control panel applet to disable the click event for the wheel on my mouse. Exactly how you would do this depends on what mouse you have.

Thanks for the tip. This happened again a couple of days ago … first time since my post. Your suggestion worked perfectly. Clicking the mouse wheel got everything running fine again.
