    I have a workbook, book.xltx in the folder C:UsersCWBillowAppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcelXLSTART.

If I go there and right-click and open it, all looks fine. But if I just start Excel, the template isn’t being used. What am I doing wrong here?

      Hi CWBilow
Is that folder listed as the Excel Startup location listed in Trusted locations?

In my 2013 I see locations for a default User Startup and an Excel Startup.

My Excel Start up is off Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14XLSTART

      Cheers

          Hi
          Does this article help?

I have a sheet that I set up, Book.xltx. I saved it to my desktop, but then copied it to “C:UsersCWBillowAppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcel” . I right-clicked it and it was the file I had set up.

But, when I start Excel, Excel has it’s own starting worksheet, and I dunno where it is getting it from.

I had done this easily in Excel 2010. I don’t know why this is such a problem.

Not a lot of new info there, Geof. I can sort of get along by formatting a sheet the way I want it, and storing it as read-only in XLSTART. Then when I save it I will be forced to rename (and relocate) it.

That works, sorta, but it is hard to believe that MS didn’t allow for the starting template as they always had in the past.

Geof, I just went back to be sure. C:UsersCWBillowAppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcelXLSTART is listed in the Trusted locations, and, the file that is in that folder is formatted correctly, and is NOT AT ALL like what Excel opens up with on its own.

Where is Excel pulling that file from, I wonder?

          Hi

Sorry but I am in the same boat as you.
And I have my head in the hunny jar reflecting on judgement. I am going down to the creek to toss sticks and think some more.

It just absolutely drives me batty that something I have done and redone for, oh, at least ten tears is totally evading me. Of course there is always he chance of a bug, or that Microsoft changed its methods, but why and how then become the questions.

I don’t have a creek to got to since I am in the desert. Ah me…

I found the template location. It is C:UsersCWBillowAppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcelXLSTART, just like in Excel 2010. I don’t know why it wasn’t working before, but I went back to my “pre-Office 2016” image backup, and started over, and this time it worked fine.

Does the Options dialog resemble excel 2010

In Options>>Advanced>>General we can specify a path to open all files at Startup.
