Evolution is an incredibly versatile email/calendar/PIM that … has been called an ‘Outlook replacement’ by every tech site from ZDNet to InfoWorld. Evolution [is] … able to connect to Microsoft Exchange Server and schedule/accept Microsoft Outlook Meetings.
The above comes from the Windows Installer page. The download page is here

For dyed-in-the-wool Netscape/Mozilla/TBird users – who need regular calendar/contact interaction with Outlook/Apple users – this seems to offer a much fuller feature set than is likely to be available for (at least) a year or two.

Does any Lounger have experience of running this on a WinXP (or other Win32) platform?

Like other applications originally written for Linux, Evolution requires GTK to be installed as part of its infrastructure.

From the resounding lack of responses, apparently not. Perhaps they should have named the product “Intelligent Design” instead of “Evolution”.

Weelll Looking at the URL gnome.org, I can now see why I have never heard of it evilgrin

No experience with it on the Win32 platform for me. However, I have used the software on a Linux OS previously.

Personally, it was too much program for my needs, as I was only using it for personal email at home. At work, we’re a Lotus Notes shop (don’t go there – I’m happy with it).

I’m sure there was a Slashdot discussion on Evolution not too manydays ago. Unfortunately, I don’t have the link.

I recall somecomments that’s it doesn’t have as many Exchange-aware features as Outlook.

Thanks everyone. This definitely looks like a product to watch. Unlike every Mozilla mail client since the very, very first, Tbird 1.5.0.4 is consistently having trouble polling multiple mail accounts. If that continues with newer models, I may give Evolution a test drive.

I’m not having any problem polling 6 separate email accounts – 5 from my ISP and one GMail account – everything comes thru just fine.

>I’m not having any problem

• are any of the accounts high volume – perhaps 10-20+ in a single polling?
• do you use a “handling filter” between the ISP and TBird – such as SpamAssassin?
>are any of the accounts high volume – perhaps 10-20+ in a single polling? Yes as many as 50 on my GMail account
>do you use a “handling filter” between the ISP and TBird – such as SpamAssassin? No – utulize only the filters in TBird – so far I’ve been lucky less than 1% are spam

Thanks. As you (may) infer, messages start getting garbled/abbreviated on the high-volume account. I suspect this is due to the SpamAssassin checking process. TBird’s junk filters are fairly reliable for me also.

Others on the Mozilla Forums (although not that many) seem to have experienced the same problem. At present, I am having to shut down TBird before every hibernation – and delete Inbox.msf – with great regularity. (Everything passes through one account.)

Ed, I am digging up this old post to ask you about Evolution. I got it working on Vista and I can send on my gmail account but I can’t get to receive gmail.
Could you share with me the settings you are using…..

So far I like Evo, and I am anxious to see if it will replace Outlook for me. I like open source ‘stuff’.
I am slowly moving over, to see if I can get completely away from MS.

I like openoffice and have been trying to use it as much as I can to get over the learning curve.

But getting back to EVo, I like it but like I said I can’t get gmail to work. I have 5 accounts and really need it to work with gmail.

thanks

My response was to unkamunka in regards to TB polling multiple accounts, not Evolution – my TB 2.0.0.21 is currently polling 9 different accounts, 3 Gmail – 1 high volume (60+ per day), 1 from my ISP and 5 from my private domains. Sorry that my post was misleading.

Opps, I re-read the post and saw that you were talking about TB. . .sorry,

Maybe someone else will have an answer about Evolution…..

Thanks,
