Reading the cnet downloads site forum just now I came across the (att) freeby which seems to be well spoken of in comparison to the Microsoft’s search app. Any comments about whether it is worth downloading please. Thanks Dave.

This product has many good reviews across multiple download sites. It has some limitations, the main ones being it only indexes NTFS file systems, and it only indexes file and folder names.

I saw one negative review about possible file corruption. As it was just the one negative review, the person concerned may have another problem with their system and the corruption may not be related to this program.

If you are looking for comments, perhaps it would be a good idea to also point at the place where you found the software, instead of using a screen shot. I.e. posting a (live) link.

Thanks for the comments, better to be safe than sorry as there are so may downloads that can [like Avira] end up causing problems; in my case, finding it difficult to uninstall completely & thanks for the point about posting a live link rather than a screen shot. Dave.

IIRC, you are running XP. Is there a particular need for a need search indexer? Do you have the latest versionWindows Search installed? It is much better than the original search in XP. There are other free products that work well also under XP – Copernic Desktop Search – The Search Engine for Your PC & Google Desktop Download.

Hi Joe…reading through the thread again it struck me that I had not answered your question as to why I should need another search as Windows Search update is better than is the former. There is no particular reason, just saw some thread about it in an e-newsletter I get. I did click on the first link you suggested and downloaded it then noted that Ian was told if he did not like it to simply uninstall it again. Should I want to do the same! where is it saved please? Regards Dave.

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. It should be listed near the end as “Windows Search 4.0”.

Hi Joe…… I looked at the end of the list as you suggested and there as there is no evidence of Windows Search I went to my download folder and clicked on the download icon but it would not install but simply flashed the following message on screen. Is this because I am using XP rather than Vista? Dave.

It appears that you downloaded the version for Windows Server 2003. Go to Windows Search 4.0 and make sure you select the version for your operating system (which is 32-bit XP I believe).

If you mean just the 32-bit vs 64-bit version of the patch. The 32-bit patch is meant to be used with a 32-bit version of the operating system mentioned. Generally, the install program will check to make sure that you are installing the patch on the appropriate operating system (as seen by your original error message).

If you mean the difference between 32-bit & 64-bit operating system, the diference is essentially the amount of RAM that can be addressed by any one program. There are other differences that are dependent on the OS being discussed.

I have been using Search Everything v. 1.2.1.371 for months now on a Vista Home Premium system, and am completely satisfied. I find it way faster than the Search built into Vista, and also more thorough.

Everything is a marvellous tool, very fast, very intuitive and unobtrusive. It’s a shame the program only works with local drives, not network drives. One small bug I’ve come across: when you right-click a drive letter (instead of a folder on that partition) to search the entire partition, the program will show “C:”” in the address bar and no search results will be shown. Replacing the quotation marks after the colon with a backslash (“C:”) fixes the issue instantly, but you will need to do that each and every time you want to search an entire partition. But that’s a small prize to pay…

‘Everything’ is good but, as previously stated, it is limited to file & folder names. I have been using the free home use version of Copernic Destop Search (CDS) for years and now just installed it on my Windows 7 x64 system. It is fantastic as it searches names & content in files, email, pictures, music, video, etc.

I absolutely cannot imagine living in the digital word without this tool; I must use it 100 times per day.

yes indeed it is a good free ware prog fast and efficient . not perfect , but i have used it for a long time , the other one i like is “find and run robot “
