Please can someone tell me what is going on here? Running Win 7 Pro 64-bit, connected to a WHS 2011.

Event Viewer shows that, several times each minute, I have an error, always “Event 8, SMSvcHost 4.0.0.0”. Then, in the Preview Pane, “An error occurred while dispatching a duplicated socket: this handle is now leaked in the process.” Most often, it shows Event ID: 3596; sometimes it is 3872.

I cannot detect any performance deficit, other than, periodically, the WiFi adapter seems to need to be re-set, but I’m not entirely sure the two are connected. It was looking for the cause of the need to reset the WiFi adapter that brought this string of errors in Event Viewer to my notice.

Researching the string “Event 8, SMSvcHost 4.0.0.0” brought suggestions that the .NET Framework may need to be updated and/or repaired; I have done both, now updated to 4.6.1, but the frequency of these errors does not seem to have diminished.

Is this serious? The text references the .NET Framework client trace logs. Where may I find these, and what am I going to learn from them?

While you have a different message in the lower pane to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2536618 the fact that you have to reset the WiFi adapter would suggest they are related.

Clicking on the article number link in the article tells you that you have to contact MS for the Hotfix and if it applies, they should tell you or give (hopefully free) advice in how to resolve it.

Sudo – thanks, thought that you and the rest of WSL would be interested in the (partial) outcome.

There is no link to the hotfix at the address that you posted, so I ended up on webchat. That led to a broken link; the MS Chat Tech said that the hotfix had been withdrawn.

However, one thing was clear that many people posting my type of problem also had a WHS attached, suggesting this may be the source of the errors. The MS Chat Tech led me to another link to a series of hotfixes (for WHS2011, rather than Win 7 Pro-64), at KB2781272. Now I have an eMail with links to these files, and propose to download them. However, I’m going to read around a bit before running them.

Yes, I’d said that you needed to contact MS for the Hotfix.

As MS have Hotfixes for WHS then they must be aware of possible problems.

Windows would normally create a restore point prior to installing any updates, but to be sure, if you are a bit distrustful of them then create your own first.

Are you able to disable WHS in services.msc – reboot and then see if you still get the Event ID 8 ?
