      Hi Woody

Just a comment about the 1607 update. I went to it when it came out. I at first found no problems. But then i found out that it took the compatibility program away and in doing that my 910 Logitech web cam no longer worked. I went to their site and found out that it affects all their webcam @ 1607 update. I went back before 10 days were up to the 1511 build and my webcam works again. So MS messed up another program to force out 1607 build. Just another mistake MS has made. blocking program that are existing on PC’s should not be blocked by someone’s operating system if they affect the normal operation of the PC. Thanks

      This is truly remarkable Woody.
How can we trust anything that comes out of Microsoft when they can’t even get their main product to function reliably almost a year after it was released?
Microsoft is what most of the world relies on to function?

    • #37483

      Another zapped driver. Ouch.

Do you have a link to the Logitech page?

    • #37484

Neowin.net is also reporting the problems with the Windows 10 anniversary update here:
      http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-investigating-freezing-issues-on-pcs-after-windows-10-anniversary-update

If I wanted to upgrade some of my other PCs from Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 right now, I’ll just go with the Threshold 2 or v1511 version with latest CU for V1511 instead of upgrading to Windows 10 v1607.

    • #37485

Here is a link and possible fix however i am
not touching version 1607 for quite awhile till they clean 1607 up. i am happy so far back on version 1511.

WEll Woody I downloaded 10 Annni version and had nothing but trouble and was presented with a very unstable PC things worked, did not work or even disappeared.
Whilst I missed the roll back to 7 I took my machine to an engineer who whipped off 10 and reinstated 7.
I am now in heaven – a stable and usable PC again.
W 10 – I have no words to describe how awful.

So today, Windows 10.494 decided to update itself to Windows 10.545, even though I told it to wait until 8/30 @ 1pm.

Funny thing is, Windows Update shows that KB3176493 is downloading.

Also, Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607 shows as “Requires Restart.”

When I use wushowhide, I now have 20 updates waiting for me (I added the numbering for my own sanity:
      01. Microsoft driver update for HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL5
      02. Microsoft driver update for HP DeskJet812C
      03. Microsoft driver update for HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL5
      04. AMD – Other hardware – PCI bus
      05. Intel – Other hardware – Intel® Watchdog Timer Driver (Intel® WDT)
      06. Wacom Technology – Other hardware – Wacom Device
      07. Intel driver update for Intel® Management Engine Interface
      08. INTEL driver update for Intel® 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #1 – 9C10
      09. INTEL driver update for Intel® 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #1 – 9C16
      10. INTEL driver update for Intel® 8 Series PCI Express Root Port #1 – 9C14
      11. INTEL driver update for Intel® 8 Series LPC Controller (Premium SKU) – 9C43
      12. Microsoft Silverlight (KB3162593)
      13. Intel – Other hardware, WLAN – Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC7260
      14. Intel Corporation – Bluetooth Controller – Intel® Wireless Bluetooth®
      15. Intel Corporation – Graphics Adapter WDDM 1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM 1.2, Graphics…
      16. Lenovo- Other hardware – Lenovo PM Device
      17. Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 (KB3171021)
      18. Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607
      19. Lenovo – LCD, Other hardware – Wide viewing angle & High density FlexView Display 1…
      20. Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB2267602 (Definition 1.227.551.0)

I have not hidden any of these 20 updates yet.

As you can see most are software updates for hardware, which always make me nervous.

I know that SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 (KB3171021) is because of other software that I have installed.

KB3176493 does now show up here but “Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607” shows up here.

      What is happening?

      What should I do?

    • #37489

You lost me in the first sentence:

Windows 10.494 decided to update itself to Windows 10.545

      I don’t understand….

    • #37490

First, my computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad S1 Yoga. I say that Windows 10.494 updated itself to Windows 10.545 because I checked Metered Connection a few days ago and made sure that it was turned ON. Later, a couple of days ago on Wednesday, I received a message something like “the update has been downloaded” while using the WiFi at my local public library. I checked Windows Update and discovered that Windows Update had decided to schedule the installation of the Update for 1pm that day. I reset the date for the last date available at the time, August 30, but could not change the time, so I left it at 1pm. I did not think to check the status of Metered Connection.

Yesterday, Thursday, I was using the WiFi again at my local public library. After using it steadily for more than an hour, it dropped. I tried the Windows Troubleshooter but it did not solve the problem. I closed all of my applications. I right clicked on the Windows icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen, selected “Shut down or sign out” (the power menu) and selected “Restart.” There was then and still is an “Update and Restart” option on the menu and I am certain that I did not select it.

Restart was taking much longer than usual when I received an “Installing Updates” message and it counted up to 30%. I let Restart continue to conclusion. When it finished, WINVER told me that I was now on Windows 10.545.

Today, when I brought the computer up from “Sleep,” Windows Update now shows only “Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607.”

I hope that I am now clear why I believe that Windows 10.494 updated itself to Windows 10.545. The next time that I receive an “update completed” message, I absolutely will check to make sure that “Metered Connection” is still on.

Using WUSHOWHIDE, all twenty (20) updates, including “Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607” are still showing. The rest of my comments and my two final questions are still concerning me.

Thank you in advance for your next response.

    • #37491

Oh, now I understand! You’re saying that you were updated from Win10 10586.494 to 10586.545. Sorry for being so dense. There are lots and lots of build numbers floating around.

With wushowhide that way, you’re blocking the upgrade to the Anniversary Update – which is a very sound decision, in my opinion.

Something must’ve happened to your metered connection setting. Are you using Win10 Home or Pro?

    • #37492

      Woody:

I am using Windows 10 home, bootstrapping a business (just me for now) and will upgrade to Pro when cashflow permits.

I have not put checkmarks in any of the twenty WUSHOWHIDE entries yet.

Thank you for the prompt response.

    • #37493

You may not want to spend the money on Pro. The reason I ask: If metered connection isn’t working, you may want to go in and turn off the Windows Update service.

    • #37494

      Woody,

If I want to hide some of the twenty updates in WUSHOWHIDE, I still have to check them don’t I?

Thank you for that last suggestion about turning off Windows Update. I did not believe that it was an option with Windows 10.

Or do I have to update the Registry?

Finally, is the “Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607” a euphemism for “UPGRADE to ANNIVERSARY UPDATE?

Again, thank you for all that you do for Windows users.

    • #37495

Yes, if you want to hide the patches, you need to check them in wushowhide.

Turning off the Windows Update Service in Win10 is not difficult: in the Cortana search box, type

      services.msc

press Enter. Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click on it. In the box marked “Startup type” choose “Manual.” Make sure the Service status is “Stopped” (click the Stop button if you have to), then click OK.

Yes, “Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1607” is, precisely, the upgrade to Anniversary Update.

    • #37496

      Woody,

Thank you for your advice, I installed the Windows Defender update intentionally.

Unfortunately, I also installed one of the HP1200 Printer Updates accidentally. So I reran WUSHOWHIDE, and installed the other HP1200 Printer Update and the HP812C Printer Update intentionally.

I did this to prevent any annoying future Printer Updates for those two printers, since I know that if they break, I can always go to HP.com and update with the latest and greatest HP printer drivers, which is consistent with your advice.

    • #37497

      Woody:

I must have used WUSHOWHIDE too late. Yesterday, Tuesday, 8/30 the update started a little later (about one hour) than the schedule that I had agreed to last week.

I believe that I saw KB3176934, KB3176936 and KB3176938 somewhere on WUSHOWHIDE. Now, KB3176934 seems to have installed and I have the other two hidden, along with most of the hardware related software on my list above.

WINVER says that I am on Windows 10 version 14393.0 on this Windows Home system.

Yesterday, I could not get WUSHOWHIDE to show up using the Cortana/START data entry field. After I found it with File Explorer and executed it a couple of times from there, the Cortana/START data entry field now works with WUSHOWHIDE as it did on version 1511.

I have hidden KB3176936 and KB3176938 “successfully” with WUSHOWHIDE.

My new worry is that I can no longer find the METERED CONNECTION option.

    • #37498

If you upgraded to 1607/14393.0 less than ten days ago, you can go back to 1511: Start, Settings, Update & Security, Recovery. The option to go back should still be there.

The metered connection option is only there if you’re using WiFi. If you switched to a plugged-in connection, it’s gone.

      Woody:

I have only used WiFi with this computer ever since I learned about METERED CONNECTION from you months ago.

    • #37500

      Woody:

Is Windows Update smart enough to leave me alone for another month if I fall back version 1511 10xxx.545 (the August update)?

    • #37501
    • #37502

So has the “Set as metered connection” slider disappeared? Weird.

    • #37503

as of sep 1 with 3 or 5 followup comprehensive updates following aniversay seems the basic “update experience” has bee improved significantly after what 9 months of hell?

No comment on any of the device driver issues just the core functionality of the update tool itself seems to finally be under control. way to go MS team!

Now let’s see how long it takes them to break it again . . .

    • #37504

      Woody:

I have been so tied up the last few days that I have not had a chance to respond to this message.

The “Network and Internet” group under settings has been significantly changed on my computer with the “1607/14393.0” version of the Anniversary Update as described before. IIRC, I believe that KB3176934 got installed before I cranked it down hard enough. So I would describe this system as 14393.0 through KB3176934 if that makes sense to you. I can no longer find “METERED CONNECTION” under “Network and Internet” under “Settings.” Since it was there before and it would make sense for it to stay there in the new structure which adds WiFi-Sense, HotSpot 2.0 and Paid WiFi type networks under the WiFi category, I plan to go back to 1511 on Tuesday. That will be exactly one week (7 days) after I lost control and was upgraded to version 1607.

Also, I just HID KB3189031, which is the Adobe Flash Update for version 1607.

    • #37505

When you type winver in the Cortana search box, what do you get?

    • #37506

      It still shows 14393.0

    • #37507

If KB3176934 got installed, you’d be at 14393.82. There’s something screwy going on.

Since you’re on 14393 anyway, I’d suggest that you install the latest cumulative update, 3176938, and see if that fixes the problem.

    • #37508

OK, I will set the two cumulative updates 3176936 and 3176398 to show one at a time and see what happens.

    • #37509

      Woody:

After sending you the 2:27pm message on 9/5, I UNHIDEd KB3176936 and it failed to run as an update. I have done several things and this has happened twice now. I even tried running updates as Administrator. No joy. Maybe this is why it shows that I failed twice.

I have tried to set up KB3176938 to run automatically without running KB3176936 first. It does not run. I will wait for one reply from you and try whatever you suggest on Tuesday, 9/6. If that does not work, I still have the option of the local Microsoft Store, which is less than 5 miles away.

    • #37510

      WOODY: NO WORRIES!

I stopped in at the Microsoft Store nearby and 3176938 and 317693 installed easily. We are now at 14393.105, so I will stay at this level.

Maybe the solution to non-installing updates is/was that the bandwidth is a lot larger at the store than it was in Panera, where I was working when having the problems.

METERED CONNECTION is still in 1607. Open up SETTINGS -> NETWORK&INTERNET. Pick Wi-Fi from the left side of the window that opens. Now a list of WiFi connections opens in this window. Click on the network name, which is black, not blue as in hyperlink. Even though it is black text, it opens a new network specific window for the selected network. METERED CONNECTION is there.

I just checked by clicking on the concentric arcs in the lower right corner, which indicates available networks. Click on the name of the network. An underlined Properties link opens up. Click on Properties and the same network specific menu opens up. Two ways to get to the same information.

Significantly, this means that METERED CONNECTION is now at the level of the individual WiFi network, not a single ON-OFF decision for all networks.

I hope that this helps other people.

    • #37511

      Thanks!

    • #37512

Take it to the Microsoft Store and let us know how they fare!

    • #37513

      Hi Woody,
We’re at 1511 10586.545 and have had to set one user’s ethernet to metered. Has there been any updates that will fix the printing issues that KB3176493 has caused? (prints 2 pages errors out on successive pages)
      Thank you!

      Larry

    • #37514

Other than KB 3186988, which looks like a hotfix, there’s nothing. Details here:

      http://www.infoworld.com/article/3114705/microsoft-windows/progress-report-where-we-stand-on-fixes-for-the-big-bugs-in-windows.html

I fully expect the problem to be fixed this coming Tuesday.

    • #37515

Thanks Woody! Guess we’ll have to swing in the wind a bit longer!

    • #37516

      Woody:

I received notification this morning that Windows Anniversary Update had downloaded new patches. I checked and the September CU (KB3189866) and the Security Update for Flash (KB3188128) had been downloaded. I suspected that the change in the Anniversary Update changing the METERED CONNECTION from a single decision for ALL NETWORKS to a single decision for EACH NETWORK (I have about 50 free Wi-Fi networks that I have used on this computer with Windows 10 1507, 1511 and now 1607. Most of them are businesses that serve coffee or public libraries that allow me to drink coffee. I checked only about 25% of the free Wi-Fi Connections and found a mix of ON and OFF statuses for METERED CONNECTION.

I have to conclude that the change in how METERED CONNECTION is handled in the Anniversary Update has allowed the two updates to get through.

I wish that Microsoft would add a METERED CONNECTION POLICY decision opportunity to Windows 10. It would be POLICY FOR METERED CONNECTIONs FOR FREE WI-FI NETWORKS: SET SAME (UNIVERSAL) POLICY ACROSS ALL SUCH NETWORKS or SET INDIVIDUAL (ONE BY ONE) POLICY FOR ALL SUCH NETWORKS.

The only other simple option, IMHO, is for them to not force the update unless the system is shut down or restarted.

    • #37517

      VERY good point.

    • #37518

      Woody:

As I wrote above, on September 14, I received a notification that Updates had been downloaded and were ready to install. I just checked and the MSRT for September had been installed on 9/14 after installing the Anniversary Edition and related software on 9/5.

Right now, September CU (KB3189866) is waiting to be installed and so is the new Security Update for Flash (KB3188128). The only thing right now keeping them from being installed AFAIK is that I changed my Active Hours — which were initially set as 8am to 5pm when 1507 or 1511 was installed — to be 8am to 8pm. It seems with 1607 that MS may have decided to allow 60 hours of work time from Monday through Friday. I am assuming that this is local time, which for me is CDT currently.

My power menu options right now are: SIGN OUT, SLEEP, UPDATE AND SHUT DOWN, UPDATE AND RESTART.

I intend to be very careful until you go back down to DEFCON 3 to keep putting this computer to SLEEP. I will try to figure out the cause (besides sloppiness) if the September CU and Security Update for Flash (try to?) install prematurely.

FYI, I am continuing to use this old thread so that you can see my cumulative experience all in one place.

    • #37519

      Woody:

So, yesterday, I exited the computer by choosing SLEEP.

A few minutes ago, I tried to start it up for a period of time this afternoon. The lock screen came up but I could not log in to use it. After several tries at this, I held down the power button for “long enough” and it seemed to stop. Then I pressed the power button and it came up with the manufacturer (Lenovo) boot screen.

Then Windows 10 came up and said something like “update downloaded” or “100% updated” and then in a very few seconds showed the Lock screen again. This time, I was able to bring up the Login Password window, log in and start to diagnose. This is what I found WINVER says 14393.105, which I believe is still the Windows 10 Version 1607 Update for August.

I checked Update History and found that the Security Update for Flash (KB31881280 had been installed with a September 14 date, even though it must have been yesterday or today, September 17 or 18. I clicked to Windows Update and found that September CU (KB3189866) was still waiting to be installed. I clicked on “Update” or “Download” and “Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB2267602 (Definition 1.227.2617.0)” was now also in “Updates are Available.”

I am at my usual library which is still recognized apparently as a METERED CONNECTION (presumably grandfathered in during the upgrade to Version 1607), so I am not surprised to see:

“Updates are available. We’ll download them when you are not using a metered connection, or you can download 431.30 MB-715.46 MB using your current data connection (charges might apply). You might still need to connect to unmetered Wi-Fi for some updates.”

DOES THIS POSSIBLY MEAN THE COMPUTER TRIED TO INSTALL THE SEPTEMBER CU (KB3189866) AND FAILED?

    • #37520

Entirely possible. Keep your metered connection!

    • #37521

      Woody:

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention one more piece of information from yesterday. When I sent the message, the POWER MENU showed only the standard options: SIGN OUT, SLEEP, SHUT DOWN AND RESTART.

That information and all of the other current status information that I included are all unchanged as I send this message.

It seems that Microsoft is in no hurry to update my Windows software.

    • #37522

I am at my second stop of the day, using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet, doing work, while I wait for the next phone call that triggers more miles of driving.

Both stops today have been places that were not METERED CONNECTIONS when I checked at first. After setting the first connection to METERED CONNECTION, I checked the status of Windows Update. At that time, the September CU (KB1389866) was still showing under UPDATE STATUS as waiting to be installed and the Definition Update for Windows Defender had disappeared.

I finished what I had to do at my first stop, put the computer to SLEEP and drove for more than a half hour to the next stop. I sat down here, probably wasted less than five minutes checking emails and a couple of statuses before checking the METERED CONNECTION status here. Again I had to set METERED CONNECTION ON at this location. Then I checked Windows Update -> UPDATE STATUS. It showed the September CU as 95% installed and did not show the Definition Update of WINDOWS DEFENDER. I worked for a while, maybe 15 minutes and checked Windows Update again. This time UPDATE STATUS had changed. It now began:”A restart is required to finish installing the following updates:” and both the September CU (KB1389866) and the Definition Update for Windows Defender are listed! I clicked on UPDATE HISTORY and it lists the September CU
as “Requires RESTART to finish installing.”

Maybe I should not be surprised at all by this, but I am. Fortunately my METERED CONNECTIONS are not really METERED, they are free WiFi where I stop.

I have seen your comments about the September CU not always finishing installing. Having seen what I have seen today, I will not be surprised if I learn that the September CU is made up of a number of pieces and that Microsoft has now repaired it by replacing some pieces (but not the whole CU) if it has previously had trouble being installed on my system.

I will keep trying to stall off the September CU until you go back to DEFCON 3. I predict that I be able to be automatically RESTARTED when I am at a new WiFi connection. When that happens, I will let you know.

I hope that all of this has been helpful to you and anyone else who is still following it.

    • #37523

      Woody:

I meant to send an update on Wednesday, 2016-09-21 but I forgot to “Submit Comment” before putting the computer to sleep. IIRC, on that day, I found that both the Windows September MSRT, (KB890830), and the Security Update for Flash, (KB3188128), had been installed, but they both had an installation date of 2016-09-14 on the Update history, which I find disorienting but probably is showing the first date of install attempt (maybe with partial success). I WISH MICROSOFT WOULD SHOW THE DATE THE INSTALL COMPLETED, NOT BEGAN. Or, even better, both START and COMPLETED dates. The Power Menu had choices of SIGN OUT, SLEEP, SHUTDOWN and RESTART with no mention of UPDATE. I felt that the pressure was off for installing the September CU, (KB3189866).

On Thursday, 2016-09-22, I received a notification in the lower right hand corner of the screen, which then went to the ACTION CENTER, telling me that UPDATES ARE WAITING (READY?) TO BE INSTALLED. When I checked the Update status screen, I saw the next three lines of information (each one shown inside a set of quotes):
“A restart is required to finish installing the following updates:”
“• Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB2267602 (Definition 1.227.2939.0).”
      “• Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3193494).”

On the Update history page, the two topmost updates were each followed by a hyperlink (in blue) saying (I have added quotes at both ends again): “Requires a restart to finish installing”. The two updates are (with quotes added):
“Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3193494)”
“Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3189866)”

My interpretation is that Microsoft is treating Cumulative Updates in a very special way, presumably because they are so large (and risky?). Other types of updates — 1) Definition Updates for Windows Defender, 2) Security Updates for Flash and 3) Windows Monthly MSRTs – all of which I classify as “Securty Updates” are pushed through quite independently of the Cumulative Updates.

Finally, today, Sunday 2016-09-25, nothing has changed since Thursday, 2016-09-22.
I looked at this as I finished writing it, and it looks to me that this is a foreshadowing of how things will operate in October.

Right now, I will be careful about accessing new Wi-Fi networks and absolutely stay in my ACTIVE HOURS of 8am to 8pm. I am relieved that Microsoft has extended ACTIVE HOURS to 12 hours per day, continuous.

This will probably be my last message on this thread until KB3193494 and KB3189866 are installed. I hope that will only occur when you go to DEFCON 3 and I turn off the METERED CONNECTION for a while.

    • #37524

      Woody:

I received a notification from Microsoft at 4:40pm local time that they would restart my system at 8:40pm this evening. This would force the UPDATE. They probably picked this time because it is after my ACTIVE HOURS end. Unfortunately for them, I plan to put the computer to sleep at 7:15pm and not turn it on again until after ACTIVE HOURS start again tomorrow at 8am.

This is getting very interesting :-).
