So my dad calls me today: “I can’t get into my tax software.” Yes, he’s 96 years old and still works on taxes on occasion. “Every time I launch the ic

First we had all the bloatware PC makers installed on a new PC which you had to uninstall. Now that has somewhat been reduced I now deal with Microsoft’s intrusive behavior installing apps I never wanted or was asked if I wanted installed. Co-Pilot for me is very much a beta that I do not care to rely on for anything. Uninstalling it is easy enough for sure, but really should not be installed through a Windows update. I am not 96 years old, but I am old enough to remember when Windows was just a operating system and I downloaded and installed the apps I wanted on my PC. I am sure Microsoft would love me to surround myself with everything Microsoft in terms of apps and services. But that’s simply never going to happen especially after becoming the company that proves all the time that it does not respect the end user.

You don’t own the OS and by accepting the EULA you gave Microsoft free hand in installing / removing any software/ feature.

And that is the problem. If we were asked it would be different.

Exactly.  If I wanted a complete PC environment, I’d get an Apple product.  All I want is the OS to run the computer, including a way to interface with it; let me choose my add-ons.

(And no, Linux is not an option because too much of my business-critical software doesn’t run properly on it.)

I would be interested to know why SB bothered to uninstall the Copilot app from her father’s PC.

After I installed Windows 10 on my PC, I removed all the Windows 10 apps from view. So my taskbar and Start menu contain no Windows 10 apps. Yes, my Start menu is basically a blank sheet! I didn’t bother to uninstall any of the Windows 10 apps. As long as they don’t bother me and my work on the PC, I’m happy to leave them hidden away in my system.

When the Copilot app appeared on my system a few month’s ago after a Windows update, I treated it like any other Windows 10 app. I immediately removed it from the taskbar and, because of what I have stated above, it never appeared in my Start menu. But I never bothered to uninstall it. Why should I treat it differently from any other Windows 10 app?
