Eudora 7.1.0.9 misbehavior

Windows 7.1 – 64 bit
Firefox 33.0.2

Within the past 2 weeks I’ve noticed that when I am using
FF and Eudora checks for mail,the FF screen is tossed aside
and Eudora’s in-box is displayed instead. Needless to say,
very disruptive. Any notions? Thanks in advance. Fritz

JUst minimized.

In Tools ->Options -> Getting Attention (all three options now unchecked) I believe Eudora still minimizing Foxfire screen and displaying inbox. Will test tomorrow, plus with MSIE – maybe prob with Foxfire, who knows? Thanks for replying Buzz

I think the minimizing may be quite normal. If I activate my screensaver and walk away, my stuff is minimized to the main portion of the taskbar [not pinned, just minimized]. However, I think FF & tbird can be set to where they minimize to the notification section of the taskbar, I haven’t done so, I used to do that to eM Client 4,5 & now 6.

Good morning! You would think, wouldn’t you, that someone [me] who has been using PC’s since almost the *beginning* would be a little more savvy? I tend to assume things, and I upset myself when I can’t. I gather that your first name is Roland? And your last name is Stoller? Mine is Charles, although I go by Buzz.

Twitter. Perfect example. I am cautious about Twitter. When you say ‘your Followings’ does that mean people *you* follow or people who follow you? And what’s a re-tweet, or a hash tag? (No need to answer those – I will find out if I become a’Twitter-er’ .)

Regarding Eudora, I swear this is new behavior, Roland, and it is jarring. Imagine being in the middle of a chat or posting on Facebook, only to see the FB screen disappear, to replaced by Eudora’s InBox? It’s true, the FB screen is only minimized to the taskbar, but c’mon – this is rude behavior, don’t you think?

I am beginning to suspect Firefox. If you use it, you know they are constantly coming out with these tiny, incremental upgrades. We are now at 33.0.3. I mean, come on – save these for one big upgrade every six months or so, OK?

As for Eudora, my temporary kludge (fix or solution) is to shut it down completely, then check for mail every 20 or 30 minutes. This is unsatisfactory, as you can imagine. But I can suspect Eudora, or Firefox – hell, it could even be some Windows 7 update gone awry. By the way, you are the *only* kind soul who bothered to respond to my SOS call.

I will close this off for now, Roland. I am going to save your contact info. I assume you are French, living in Austin, TX (boy, that must have been some kind of culture shock for you ) But I was going through some old papers last night, just tossing out stuff, and I ran across this, in an old letter to a client when I used to consult 30 years ago.

“After quite a few years of development and improvement, the typical personal computer or p.c. is still ridiculously complicated for the average user to operate and maintain.”

Roland, I wrote that nearly 30 years ago. Have things improved that much – I mean really? I think not. Witness my struggles with Eudora.

A famous French saying comes to mind – the more things change, the more they stay the same. Indeed.

Issues I’ve had with Eudora, Thunderbird and IncrediMail have been with moving to a new computer, much more complicated than needed.

One thing nice about OE Classic is in using File, Save As, defaults to Documents and uses the information/text in the Subject line as the file name with extension of .eml.

Edit: just installed OE Classic on Win10 TP, no glitches but I haven’t set up an E-Mail account on it yet.

“Because it works, that’s why, plus plenty of folks still use it and it is too still supported.”

My wife is no help. She uses outlook at her work. She has zero patience with all things technical. “Use Outlook. What’s the problem?” Yeah, that’s helpful.

The problem is that I *like* Eudora, OK? I have been using it for 25+ years and it has always worked perfectly. Until now. And Firefox had another (***did it just now***) major upgrade yesterday. *sigh* I am going to take this whole issue to Eudora support. I haven’t had time because I’ve been putting out everyone’s fire but mine.

We must define the problem. Good, I can do that!

I have not noticed the problem as described, and am running Win 8.1, Update 1 on a new HP Laptop, 64 bit. But then, I only do manual updates to email.

I use FF 33.1, all ok. Try resettng FF, I doubt Eudora is the problem.

I seem to remember having a similar problem over 10 years ago. I did, and still, keep Eudora open but minimized to the task bar. I have always had Eudora automatically check for mail every 10 minutes. Whenever new mail arrived Eudora would automatically reduce anything I was working on to the task bar and display the Eudora Inbox in full screen mode.

I do remember finding the solution by searching the web, but that was over 10 years ago and I don’t remember where I found the solution or what it was. I do remember resolving it by making a change to Eudora’s settings, but I don’t remember what that change was.

I have gone through my options settings on the tools menu in Eudora but nothing jumps out at me, but I assume my solution was in there somewhere because I have changed operating systems twice, and computers three times since resolving that problem and in all these years it never came back.

Right now I’m running Windows 7 Pro and Firefox 33.1

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but if your problem is like mine was the solution is out there somewhere.

I haven’t had this problem myself, since I use Mailwasher to do the checking and spam-killing first. However, we (work users) have an ongoing headache with Eudora 7: we have never been able to get it to send out email in HTML. Business order emails come in nicely formatted in HTML from the shopping cart order processor, but when replying or forwarding, it will only send out in text (horribly formatted). I’ve never been able to find out if this is something that can be fixed somewhere in one of the files. Certainly, nothing in the main menus seems to work (same thing with forcing UTF-8 or others). We have to screenshot in order to send out a reply that looks like it was written this century. Has anyone here had this issue and found a way to solve it? I can’t get the boss to change to anything else, like Thunderbird or OSE.

Eudora does not support UTF-8, I understand the programmers intended to, but Qualcomm shut the project down before they did.

I have Eudora 7.1.0.9 Sponsored mode (but I believe when they closed shop, all versions included all features of “paid” mode) running on Win 7 Pro. My Eudora is well-behaved. I wonder if your problem could be caused by antivirus software? All AV software inserts itself into the communication chain to scan mail and wonder if that can cause a problem. I also run Eudora in window mode, not full screen. Perhaps that makes a difference.

I’m still on Eudora because I heavily use Eudora’s filter system, which is far superior to any other I’ve ever found. Mail formatting isn’t great, but it improved drastically when I switched to Microsoft’s viewer (Tools > Options > Viewing Mail).

Hello Woody, I am hoping you are still answering msgs asking for help. I confess I am illiterate to technical work with computers and as a result I end up paying a guru large amounts of money to help me hoping he can cure my problems. I am having trouble with Eudora, Tuesday evening it quit receiving or sending emails. Previous to this I have been getting a msg, do you want to trust this SSL Certificate. I click Yes and about 30 to 45 minutes later it comes back up. I ask my guru to help and he spent some time researching and came back to me and said you will just have to live with it, sent me a bill and did not have a cure. Now I try to send an email and that Certificate msg comes up and I click Yes, but it still will not send, and it won’t receive. I don’t know that the problem is related, but it seems like it might. I also get a msg that asks for my password. I enter it and the msg cones right back very soon asking for the password again.  Again I don’t know if that helps or not, but I’m hoping you are still answering the requests for help.  Blessings, Larry Thompson <Removed telephone number>  PS. I worked with Comcast most of the day yesterday and I can receive and send emails on their Email website, but it then bypasses Eudora and I have no record of the outgoing emails.  <removed email address>

Eudora is is an old email program. The methods of authentication have changed. Here are some links to topics concerning Eudora and the changes.

Look for a newsletter topic on how email is changing in August.  Bottom line if you are STILL using Eudora, your mail provider is more than likely won’t work.  They’ve moved away from basic authentication.
