I thought it was okay to update to the latest windows 11 version since it was already in DefCon 4 (a few weeks back it was still rated 2) and tried to do it yesterday. I have a new windows 11 ready HP ProBook 450 (15,6 inch G10 notebook) with a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1355U 1.70 GHz and so far all the updates have gone through correctly. I am currently at the Windows 11 Pro 23H2. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to be the case with the latest version. I get the error 0xc1900201 (impossible to update the reserved partition of the OS). I saw in the web several “solutions” to this problem but I don’t like them as they don’t feel safe requesting doing some cmd admin operations. I don’t understand why it is so hard for Microsoft to create an update system that solves these issues or a mode to release or increase space in the reserved partition. Especially because my 1 Terabyte SSD disk is mostly free. It gets really frustrating to have this kind of problem.

I am looking for advice in what to do, and do it safely. Is it possible that waiting further to make this update can be the solution?

    Thank you in advance,

    R.

AskWoody does not recommend upgrading to Win11 24H2 at this time. Susan does not feel 24H2 is ready for Prime time and it is still in a beta phase although Microsoft has released it to the public.
      Our advice is….WAIT.

How old is this machine? Is it still under warranty?

I’m sure you hit posts like this… https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-install-error-code-0xc1900201/00c459e1-daa0-489b-9f4d-80039d98e532
“Specifically, the error message states that your computer’s disk layout is not supported by UEFI, which is one of the reasons why the installation failed.”

It’s a new computer folks, how can you NOT support it?
I’m working on a ‘it errored out … now what’ article in the future. Hang loose and for now keep on 23H2.

1 Terabyte SSD disk is mostly free.

Can you upload Disk Management screen shot ?

As posted Win11 24H2 is not recommended yet.

    • #2731840

Revert back to Windows 11 23H2 using your image to avoid more headaches, is my advice.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...
    • #2732006

Well I will wait until they come out with 25H2… By then probably (I hope) 24H2 will be fine and I will be able to update to that version… In the mean time I will stay with 23H2. As long as it keeps on working… I don’t really need what’s the name… “Bloatware”.

I could, I think, upload a screenshot from Disk management but I read it doesn’t give adequate information for the reserved partitions…

I have been dealing with Windows since it came out with 3.1… Sincerely, I hardly ever had problems with updates. But maybe I just was the statistic outlier… 😀

      Thanks,

      R.

      • #2732097

I read it doesn’t give adequate information

It gives plenty of information for working this one out.
Post and we will advise.  🙂

Is this what you mean by Disk Management? As you see it is in italian, as I live here…

If it’s something else please let me know. And once more thanks.

By the way I am now using in control to keep the actual Windows 11 version at 23H2.

You have a 750MB partition and that should be enough, but this is not guaranteed.

Run this script from RG to get the actual free space. Note: you need to set the PS environment and run as admin. See this post (same thread).
Instead of setting the PS environment, you can fire it up via the command line. powershell -executionpolicy Bypass -file .\name_of_script.ps1

      Will try to do it.

    • #2738896

I have tried to use the script indicated using PS and running it as administrator but I get errors. Unfortunately that information is all in italian. Maybe I am not doing this correctly … It’s a really long time I have used comand lines like in the old days of MS-DOS, and sincerely I can’t remember some of them. I probably will need more “simpleton” help at the moment.

      Thanks,

      R.

Use Will’s actual script from here.

I didn’t test the script and it has some errors after being posted – the message board is not kind to code. I’ve tidied it up below and provided instructions.

      1. Copy all the text in the box below into Notepad.
      2. Save the file as “%temp%\reSpace.ps1”, without the quotes. You need to include the percent signs in the name.
      3. Open an admin Command Prompt. Win R, cmd, Ctrl Shift Enter
      4. Use this command in the Command Prompt window – you can paste into the window by right clicking on the window title bar. powershell -executionpolicy Bypass -file %temp%\REspace.ps1

      cheers, Paul

      Recovery Partition path:
WinRE is on disk in partition
      Recovery Partition size: 0 MB
      Recovery Partition free: 0 MB

Is it possible that I have a fake WinRE partition? How is it that the size is 0 MB… from disk manager didn’t look like that…

In anycase I probably would do better to wait and see what Susan will say about the Win11 24H2, when it will be ready to make the update…

I am not sure if it’s without risk using the Minitool Partition Wizard. I am afraid to make things worse.

      Thanks for the assistance…

      R.

Windows disk management will correctly report the size of the recovery partition but will incorrectly report it as empty.  Minitool Partition Wizard will correctly report how much of the recovery drive is both used and unused.  Using Minitool Partition Wizard to look at your partitions is risk free.

      Hello again,

I installed the minitool partition wizard. Attached is the information about the partition. I understood by what Paul T said that the 750 MB partion is the WinRE. I have a little more than 100 MB free in that partition and some folks out there say that you need at least 100 MB free. Nevertheless the attempts to update to version 24H2 as I told you about failed. What can I do about that? I see that in the tool you can change the size of the partition but of course I am not sure that’s not without risks. I guess that as I grow old I am getting less competent and less prone to run risks. Is it possible to clean the partition, meaning cancel files that aren’t needed or is that a no go?

I thank you for all your advise. As said earlier on I am staying at 23H2 for the moment with InControl. I will wait for AskWoody or the Patch Lady to go ahead.

      R.

    • #2741589

Yes, the 718MB partition is the WinRE recovery partition.  It needs 250MB of free space to update successfully. This link  to a minitool partition wizard tutorial explains resizing the WinRE partition.

You do not need to do anything.  Ignoring the failed WinRE update will not cause problems other than the 24H2 update.  Microsoft may eventually fix their mess.

No sign of it yet and it has been a while.

You can steal 200MB from the end of C and give that to the WinRE partition using Partition Wizard. This won’t cause any issues for Windows.
      Shrink C.
Move the WinRE partition into the free space.
      Expand the WinRE partition.

As always, make an image backup of your machine before resizing partitions.

      cheers, Paul

        Hi there,

mledman wrote: Microsoft may eventually fix their mess

Microsoft in my experience has always been the kind of company that pushes forward and forgets what it leaves behind until they find out that most people are like a few 100 km away looking as they have no intention to follow. Then they do something about it and actually have the gall to tell you that they were thinking about it already for a while… 😀 Something like this happen on the shift from Win7 to Win8. People liked 7 and didn’t like “much” 8… They stayed behind. I recall a more “nerdy” colleague making the direct upgrade from 7 to 10 without never considering the update to 8… He used Linux most of the time but had to accept that most people he had to interact with used Windows. 🙂

I know that there aren’t that many software companies that do their work properly. But often it’s the sales department that is pushy… or that is what you see in the movies. 😉

I will wait for Susan to give the go ahead.

I can use the mini partition tool to do this I guess.

I noticed that minipartition as a sort of backup but I think that’s not what you are talking about when you say I should do an Image backup… I should check what software is most recomended to do this in the forums.

Thanks for the comments and the help,

        R.

Backup software (free) we like includes: Macrium Reflect 8, Aomei Backupper, MiniTool ShadowMaker, EaseUs ToDo, Paragon.
These are in no particular order.

          cheers, Paul

    • #2744853

Still haven’t done anything to my partition as I needed to decide what sort of Backup program to use. In the end I went for Aomei. Now I have backuped my system but before I increase the size of the partition with the Partition Wizard program so I can eventualy make the update to Win11/24H2 I thought if this causes havoc with my system how am I going to be able to use the Aomei program… I noticed there is the possibility to create a Windows PE disk. Any advice? It’s going slightly off topic… But sincerely I have always done backups of my data (documents and pictures ecc) all over the place (physical and cloud) but never hardly did any system backup.

I thank you for any advice…

      • #2744877

You need to create a bootable Rescue disk/USB using your backup software.
Then you need to verify you can boot from the device, that it loads the backup software, and you can see the backup disk with the backup file, and the restore destination drive.

You cannot restore booting from the backed up disk (the one on the computer). You have to restore using the backup software on the bootable Rescue device.

    • #2745064

To boot from the rescue disk you have several options, including pressing the correct key (depends on the manufacturer) to get to the system boot menu, or telling Windows to boot to USB.

      In Windows
      Plug in the boot USB.
Open the Start menu and click on Settings (or press Windows + I).
Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
Under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
Wait for the “Choose an option” screen, select Use a device. Choose the USB device.

      cheers, Paul
