For the last month or so, when I close Word (the last open Word document, if several are open), I get a message “Run-Time error ‘5852’: Requested object is not available”. The dialog has only one enabled button, End. As far as I can tell, the documents are closed normally, and reopen normally the next time. What is going on?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 22, 2003 at 8:51 pm #655631Have you had a peek at your Normal.dot or your list of addins lately? Most likely, you’ve got
code in an addin (or Normal.dot) that’s trying but not succeeding at something. If you haven’t
seen the comprehensive checklist for troubleshooting this sort of thing, see Phil’s post 197827 -

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 23, 2003 at 3:17 am #655663You should not experience any loss with a detect & repair but you should probably back up anyway.
From within Word XP go to | tools | templates & addins | organizer
from here you will be able to see what addins/macros are in which template. Just open the template and select save as (to a backup file)

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 23, 2003 at 1:46 pm #655695hi Helen,
you won’t need the office repair. this error is most certainly coming from one of the add-ins you have installed, which is probably trying to set its saved property to true before closing, or one of the add-ins is not properly using the customizationcontext property.
unfortunately this is a difficult error to debug. the add-in causing it may just run fine, when it is the only loaded add-in or loaded with several others, while it may be causing errors with other combinations of loaded add-ins.in the end, the only way might be to move them out of the startup folder and control their loading behavior and order with an add-in of your own.
greetings,

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 24, 2003 at 5:19 pm #656087You’re welcome. As Pieter mentions, these “bugs” are difficult to track down if the
problem is an addin that don’t play well with others. That post of Phil’s is just a gem. All that stuff that a lot of us WMVPs have floating
around in our heads ready to dispense is right there for all to see. It needs a catchy
post number so its easier to remember…
