We are moving to Outlook XP from Groupwise (I would rather stay in Groupwise but that is another story). Here’s my problem:

I open an e-mail with an attachment which is a forwarded e-mail. I open the attachment. I close the attachment. I try to open the attachment again without closing the email but I am getting an error message “The Operation Failed” and I am unable to open the attachment.

The problem goes away if I close the entire message and start over. Any ideas!!!

This migration has had me logging onto this wonderful site constantly. The info here is extremely helpful. Thanks ALL!!!!!

Kind of sounds like the temporary file that is created when you open the document is not getting removed before you open the attachment again. Try waiting a little longer?

btw – depending on the capabilities of your antiVirus software, it may not be a good idea to open attachments directly from a mail item. Some AV software won’t scan the attachments that are opened this way. Our best practice is to save to disk and open it – even though Norton corporate is supposed to catch it. But few folks do it that way…

I also wonder if this tip from UnkaMunka, related to this issue explained by jscher2000, will help with the problem.

These seem to deal with opening attachments (unless I don’t understand them). My problem is that I can’t create a new email, contact, appointment or anything in Outlook 2000. I can, however, receive email and read it in the preview pane.
