I am kasinath.

I am getting the error in event viewer event ID:7023;”The Logical Disk Manager Service terminated with the following error:

“The specified module could not be found.” This error is listed in the event viewer when ever I start my system.

I am using windows xp professional with sp3 with all latest window updates.

I am using kaspersky internet security 2011 (11.0.1.400) nad microsoft security essentials.

The windows Help & supportgives follwoing details.

MESSAGE: tHE %1 SERVICE TERMINATED WITH THE FOLLOWING ERROR %2.

Explanation: The specified service stopped unexpectedly with the error indicated int message ,The service closed safely.

I followed the suggested user action as follows

1) service: Logical disk Manager.

service name : dmserver

start type : automatic
status : stopped.

sc query dmserver gave following result.

service_name : dnserver
TYPE: 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
: 1 stopped

WIN32-EXIT-CODE : 126 (0x7e)

service-exit-code: 0
check point : 0x0
wait-hint 0x0

.I tried the command sfc /scannow as suggested by a website ,using my winxp sp3 slipstreamed cd.

It simply run, with out any message.

I would like user expert option why this error occurs and How to solve it.

Note: My system sometimes goes slow or hangs while browsing(esspecially IE8) or while on the regular usage.

MY system is compaq presario SR1630il, 2GB RAM, two hard disks 1) 500GB seagate with 250GB of two partition and 2) 80GB samsung disk with two partion of 40GB each.

system partition is 250GB partition of the seagate disk.

Iam having broadband net connection of upto 2MBPS.

Hi Kasinath,

You mentioned you are using Kaspersky Internet Security and MSE. Disable one of the two if they are running in active protection as they may be conflicting.

Reboot to see if that has any impact on the issue.

Hello sir,

As adviced by you I have unintalled Microsoft security essential and restarted the system. I got the same error in the event viewer.

After looking over your original post, I see reference made to dmserver and then a few lines down dnserver. Did you type all this in or did you copy and paste?

Check your System32 folder under Windows to see if dmserver.dll is present. Is the file in the system 32 folder?
The file size should be 23,552 bytes. It should be dated 4/14/2008. If you cannot find the file there, then it has been deleted or moved. Run search to locate dmserver.dll. If you find it in a different folder, then I would suspect malware activity. That could explain why sfc /scannow did not replace the file also.

To be on the safe side, run your Kaspersky suite to check for malware infection. Also I would download and install MalwareBytes Anti-malware free and also SuperAntiSpyware Free to use as on demand supplementary scanning for malware.

1) In my system under the c:|windowssystem32 folder there is a file

dmserveresl.dll ( NOT dmserver.dll)

size 23.0 KB (23552 bytes)

size in the disk 24.0 KB(24576 bytes)

version 2600.5512.503.0.

2) “dmserver.dll” is in the folder c:windowsytem32dllcache

size 23.0 KB(23552 Bytes)
size on the disk 16.0 KB(16384 Bytes)

Both the file shows in properties->version tab-> version 1.0, internal name “dmserver”.

Kindly look in to this and advice. I will go through the maleware check of my system.

whether can I install malware bytes software, when kaspersky is in my system and active?

It is safe to install and run both Malwarebytes as well as SuperAntispyware on your system with Kaspersky as both of the free editions run on demand, and do not run actively in the background like your antivirus.

Let us know what your results are. Dmserver.dll should only be in the main System32 folder. It is not in any dllcache subfolder on my XP computer. After running the malware scans I would copy dmserver.dll back into the System32 folder.

I will check out the other folder in the meantime.

I would do thorough malware scans on the entire HD to see if any infection is found, and be sure to use some of the online scanners I linked for you.

From what I can find, dmserveresl.dll can be legitimate, but it can also be malware masquerading as that file name. My XPPro SP-3 install does not have it on the hard drive. As I mentioned before, there is no dllcache folder or subfolder in my System32 folder either. I would scan both of these files with all your malware apps to see if they find either of them malicious. If you get a clean report, then I would copy dmserver.dll back into the System32 folder, rename the one left in the dllcache folder to dmserver.old until you can test to see if the problem goes away.

I would reboot the computer after placing the dmserver.dll back into the System32 folder.

Hello sir,

Sorry to reply late,

As as per your advice I ran both the malware programs to get my system clean.

Then I just copied the dmserveresl.dll file to other location. Then renamed the dmserveresl.dll as dmserver.dll.

I rebooted the system.

Now there is no error 7023 in the event viewer.

Regarding dllcache folder as per microsoft site , it is a storage if dll files ready to replace the corrupt dll files in windows folderwhen they are modified or corrupt by third party programs.
