I am trying to help a co-worker compare two documents. She has done this before and had no problems. She is getting the attached error message. I talked with our trainer and she said they have seen the problem before but don’t know what the solution is. She says there is some kind of language or no proofing code in the document and nothing we do will get rid of it. Can anyone help?

This error does not seem to refer to a problem inside the document, but a problem with the path to the document. Does it work if the file is moved to the root of the C drive and given a short name like testing.doc?

If not, then we can rule out what the message seems to say and see whether there is some similar issue. For example, maybe the document being compared refers to an unavailable template? Try opening the document, changing the template to Normal, and then saving and comparing again.

I guess the next step would be to search the phrase “document name or path is not valid” on Google, perhaps with the target site:microsoft.com, to see if more help is available.

You were right. The document was saved in our document management program Worldox, but when I save both versions to my desktop and renamed, the compare worked. Thanks!
