Prior to installing MSWorks I copied all 6 CD’s on to my HDD hoping to install from them.
When I tried to click the autorun.exe on the first “CD” (ie. in the folder containing the copied CD) it looked like it was going to work and then gave an error from MSIE (sorry, I’ve forgotten the wording) so I (several weeks later) borrowed the 6-CD set and installed all Apps from the CD’s.

Everything except Encarta and Streets&Maps works just fine, but before I removed the CD-copies from my HDD I thought I’d try running these two apps from my HDD. They both appear to have a [Browse] button which I tried to point to the folder in C:… but it seems that both will refuse to run unless I insert the appropriate CD in my CD-drive.

Is what I’m trying to do impossible?

      Streets + Trips 2001:
FWIW: I found this review in PCMag http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,16410,00.asp%5B/url%5D
      which says:
      >>Other new features include improved drawing tools that let you annotate your map with callouts or points of interest. Users tired of swapping discs will be happy to learn they can load the entire program, maps and all, onto their hard drive for quicker access. The cost is a huge chunk of hard disk–up to 835MB.<<
I can't find anything that will allow me to use the files that I've stored on HDD – it seems to insist on having the CD. The article doesn't appear to provide any additional direction as to how to accomplish this task.

I had a similar experience with Microsoft Golf. App would not run without the CD in its drive despite all files being on the hdd.

Came to the conclusion that it was a way for Microsoft to ensure that multiple installations were not possible from the same CD — which makes sense from their viewpoint.

Dick – Just to wrap this thread up … I found an answer 🙂
at least for Streets+Trips, not sure about Encarta – S+T was the one I wanted. Maybe it would work for the Golf application too.
On CD2 from the MsWorks there is a file data.msi in the Maps subfolder (I no longer have it on my HDD so don’t have the exact path-spec)
Clicking that gives you the menu to uninstall S+T, after completion, clicking it again this time allows you to reinstall and gives the option to do a full install of the contents of CD5 to you HDD in the Program Files path. (When I did it I was working from copies of the CD-set on HDD and at one point it was necessary to move some LARGE data files into the path within the CD2-image where the installer expected them to be.

Note: I found the basis of this in a posting in MS newsgroups by one of the MVP’s. As they say WAEF – RTFM!
