Email hyperlink to pps file on server (Office XP)

Hi All!

Gosh, I wish we could still search this forum, because I’m sure someone’s already tried to do what I’m trying to do….Anyway, here goes….

I have a powerpoint slideshow (pps) on a local network file server (non-internet/intranet). I want to be able to insert a hyperlink to the slideshow in an Outlook message. So far, that’s easy.

But when you click on the link, right now it opens in a browser window. I need it to open in full screen mode, no browsing artifacts above or below.

I’ve already checked the MS site for switches, but none of them seem to work with the pps. Is it possible to do this at all? Do I _need_ the ppt in order to hyperlink it to full screen mode?

Cecelia, in a quick test, I’m able to open a *.pps file in full screen slide show mode direct from a plaintext Outlook e-mail, using the form (in my case):

serveruserpptfilesExample.pps

However, I cheated by creating the hyperlink in Word and then pasting it from Word to the Outlook e-mail message.

When you right click on a PPS file from Windows File Explorer, is there a “SHOW” option at the top of the dialog? (I’m using Windows 2000 & Office 2000, YMMV.)

Why, yes, there is a SHOW option, and it is the default action….

I tried the same as you, making my link in Word, but with the same results as before. The pps opens in a browser window, not full screen as expected. I thought that it might be Word as the email editor, but when I switch to plain text, the pps still opens in a browser window.

Is there some sort of switch that would indicate Show?

I suspected that the file association was wrong, and “Show” was my way to check, but perhaps it’s not a valid test of file assocation.

Try this; in Windows File Explorer, right click any PPS file, select Open With, if PowerPoint is not the default program, then use the “Open With” selection dialog to specify “always open files of this type” as PowerPoint. If the default is already PowerPoint, or that’s not the problem, I’m stumped.

Unfortunately, it is associated with powerpoint. Actually, that’s fortunately, because I have no way of modifying all those user settings.

I’m stumped too; in the past (probably pre-XP) I’ve opened pps’s directly into Full Screen from a link in Outlook. I can’t even find any switches to add for the link.

FWIW, if I open a .pps file from a hyperlink in an Outlook message, it opens directly in FullScreen. I’m using Office XP SP-2 on Windows XP Home SP-1.

Now, Hans, you know that’s just not fair!

Is your file on a file server or a web server? Just curious, although I can’t see why that would make a difference. Can you tell me if you did anything special to make the link in Outlook?

I’m on a locked down version of WinXP pro. If WinXP is the problem, then I probably can’t solve it. I was hoping it was a PowerPoint issue and that there was another way to create the slideshow, but making it an html project didn’t work, and the pps opens just fine if I click on it from Windows Explorer. It’s only when I try to “hyperlink” it through Outlook that I get the problem.

This is on my home PC (standalone). I can test on a network tomorrow.

I used Insert | Hyperlink to create the hyperlink.

I just tested it at work, with the presentation on a network server, and also with a presentation on our Intranet web server, both with the same result: presentation in full screen.

Thanks, Hans. It must be something freaky about our Outlook installation, then. Or maybe IE. I’m going to just give up and mark this one “unsolved.”
